The martensite generated by hardening (rapid cooling) is an extremely hard steel structure, but it carries a critical drawback:it is extremely brittle.

For this reason, using the blade immediately after hardening is dangerous. Tempering alleviates the crystal structure of martensite, sacrificing slight hardness while dramatically increasing toughness.

When iron or steel is heated, an oxide layer forms on the surface, displaying characteristic colors (called "temper colors"):
