The exact formula — typically combining charcoal powder, regional clay, and grinding stone dust — is each school's most guarded technical secret. The type of charcoal, clay origin (Bizen red earth, Yamato white clay, etc.), and additive ratios all influence the hamon's character: its width, brightness, and activity.
A base coat is applied first for adhesion. Then the edge receives a thin, precisely shaped layer — the contours of this thin layer directly determine hamon shape. The spine receives thick clay. After drying, fine adjustments are made with wooden spatulas before the critical quench.
