The contrast of color, luster, and texture between the base and the inlaid materials creates a visual effect, bringing depth and color to the flat metal surface.
Inlay techniques have a long history, and various forms of inlay developed in ancient Egypt, Persia, and China, but in Japan they were refined to a unique height alongside the development of sword fittings. The inlay techniques honed by metalworkers of the Edo period are particularly regarded as noteworthy achievements in world metal craftsmanship history. As schools such as the Gotō, Umetada, Nara, and Yokoya families competed with one another, inlay transcended the mere "embedding" technique and acquired expressive power comparable to painting.
The role of inlay in tsuba (sword guards) can be broadly categorized into three functions.
Kome-zougan is the most basic inlay technique, in which grooves or holes are carved into the base metal and then different materials are hammered into place to fix them. "Kome" means "to pack in," and the essence of this technique is that it relies on physical compression to hold the inlaid material in place.
The steps of the technique are as follows.
What determines the quality of kome-zougan is the balance between the precision of the grooves and the hardness of the inlaid material. If the grooves are too shallow, the inlaid material tends to fall out; if too deep, the strength of the base metal is compromised. The kome-zougan of master craftsmen fits so perfectly that the joint is nearly invisible, achieving a precision where the boundary line can scarcely be discerned even with a magnifying glass. Even today, kome-zougan technique is essential in the restoration of period-appropriate sword fittings, and while a fundamental technique, its quality directly reflects the mastery of the craftsman.
Nunome-zougan is a technique in which fine, intersecting grid-pattern scratches (cloth-pattern marks, or nunome) are made on the surface of the base metal, and then gold or silver foil or fine wires are rubbed into and fixed over these scratches. The grid scratches, like the weave of cloth, "catch" the metal and hold it in place; friction and these small catches allow the thin layer of metal to adhere to the base.
Specialized cloth-pattern chisels are used to create the cloth-pattern marks. Parallel lines are hammered in both directions to create grid-pattern scratches, and the peaks of these scratches act as tiny barbs that catch the gold or silver foil. If the cloth-pattern is too coarse, the metal tends to peel away; if too fine, it becomes difficult to create. Experienced craftsmen adjust the density of the cloth-pattern according to the intended use, material, and design of the work.
Among the principal uses of nunome-zougan, particularly noteworthy is "kin-nunome-ji" (gold cloth-pattern ground). This technique involves creating cloth-pattern marks across the entire surface of the base metal, rubbing gold or silver into this to create a gold or silver background, and then carving the main subject using high-relief or fine-line carving. It is particularly prominent in works by the Umetada school and Nara metalworkers. Tsuba with gold cloth-pattern ground possess a painterly richness in the carved forms that emerge against the golden background, and were especially treasured in the samurai society of the middle Edo period. On the other hand, in works combining silver cloth-pattern ground with copper kome-zougan, the warm, deep brown of the copper stands out against the cold luster of the silver, creating a unique refinement.
Kirikane-zougan is a technique in which thin sheets of gold, silver, copper, or other metals are cut into precise shapes and fitted into the base metal. "Kirikane" literally means "cut metal," and the difference from kome-zougan is that it uses sheet material pre-cut to an intended outline.
The greatest strength of this technique is the freedom in forming shapes. While kome-zougan is constrained by the shape of grooves or holes, kirikane-zougan allows metal foil to be cut into any outline — birds, flowers, dragon scales — using shears or chisels. The metalwork of the Gotō family frequently features sophisticated kirikane-zougan, in which precisely cut gold foil is fitted into copper bases in complex shapes. In particular, Gotō Jōshin and Teishin created masterpieces expressing fine botanical motifs in cut-metal inlay.
The technical challenges are in cutting the metal foil and securing it to the base. If the edges become distorted while cutting the foil, adhesion to the base is compromised, so the cut foil must be reshaped flat before use. For securing, methods similar to kome-zougan — hammering the edges to engage the base metal — were used, as well as joining with small amounts of low-melting alloys (materials similar to silver solder containing tin or lead). The latter achieves greater visual perfection but risks joint separation over time; from an assessment and preservation standpoint, the former method is more highly valued.
Iroe-zougan is an advanced inlay technique that combines multiple metal materials of different colors and textures to achieve richly varied expression comparable to painting. It combines kome-zougan, nunome-zougan, and kirikane-zougan of individual materials, using each material's inherent color as a "pigment."

Yokoya Sōmin is renowned as a metalworker who developed color-picture inlay to its highest degree. In his representative works, he combined fine-line carving in gold, kome-zougan in silver, and kirikane-zougan in shibuichi against a copper base, composing Japanese subjects such as hawks, pines, and rough waves as three-dimensional paintings. After the Yokoya school, tsuba designs shifted from being regarded as "sword-fitting ornaments" to being recognized as "independent metal paintings," becoming prestige items for which daimyo and wealthy merchants eagerly competed to commission.
The first thing to verify when appreciating a zougan tsuba is the tightness of the joint. Observe with a low-magnification loupe to confirm that the boundary between the inlaid material and the base is perfectly closed, and that there are no signs of gaps, lifting, or flaking. A work whose joint is uniformly tight all around directly demonstrates the high level of technical skill at the time of creation.
Next, observe the color of the materials and their state of preservation. Gold and silver resist oxidation relatively well, but copper and shibuichi change color over time. Copper is intentionally darkened to jet black through a "color-rising" treatment with copper sulfate solution, and then over the course of use and storage gradually transforms into a deeper, warmer black-brown. This layered color transformation is highly valued as "patina of age." However, discoloration due to rust or corrosion indicates deterioration, and distinguishing between these requires expert knowledge.
Finally, evaluate the integration of inlay and carving as a whole. In superior zougan tsuba, the individual techniques do not stand alone; rather, the contour lines of the carving naturally follow the material boundaries of the inlay, and three-dimensional form and flat color expression are organically unified. In works by master craftsmen, both the "pictorial completeness" when viewed from several tens of centimeters away and the "craft precision" when examined closely with a magnifying glass are simultaneously achieved — it is this duality that constitutes the greatest appeal of zougan tsuba.
Kome-zougan, nunome-zougan, and kirikane-zougan, each with their own principles and characteristics, have been freely combined by master craftsmen to concentrate painting, sculpture, and craftsmanship into a single tsuba. Inlay is not merely "ornamentation" but rather a craft as dialogue, in which the brilliance of gold, the purity of silver, the depth of copper, the robustness of iron — different materials each asserting their own unique beauty while harmonizing as a single work.
When appreciating a Japanese sword, the eye naturally turns to the hamon and jihada, but the thought and technique of the metalworker embodied in the tsuba's inlay likewise represents part of the essence of Japanese metalcraft in which the world takes pride.
