In the world of sword appraisal, these subtle details visible in the hamon are called "kesiki" (景色). Among kesiki, four patterns are especially valued for their aesthetic appreciation: "tobiaki" (scattered hardening), "yubasiri" (flowing whiteness), "kinsuji" (golden threads), and "inazuma" (lightning marks). These are visualizations of complex metallurgical transformations that occur during the hardening process—products of both chance and intention arising from the swordsmith's skill and the quality of the tamahagane (sword steel).
Kesiki in hamon serve as crucial clues in sword appreciation for determining school lineage, historical period, and maker attribution. Even the same kesiki appears differently in Soshu-school swords versus Bizen-school blades, and trained appraisers can discern these differences. Many of these kesiki patterns can be intentionally pursued to some degree, yet they cannot be completely controlled—they are also natural phenomena emerging from subtle variables such as quenching conditions, steel composition, and water temperature.
Tobiaki occurs when scattered spots or islands of hardening appear in the jigane (steel body) away from the main hamon outline. As its name suggests, the hamon appears to have "scattered" into the jigane, creating a striking visual effect.
The mechanism arises from uneven heat distribution during quenching. When tsuchizoki (clay coating) is not perfectly uniform, or when the blade wavers slightly in water during quenching, portions of jigane that should remain unhardened locally reach hardening temperatures, generating martensite. After polishing, these areas appear as bright white spots and islands—the tobiaki.
Tobiaki is frequently observed in Soshu-school blades (particularly those of Masamune and Sadamune lineages) and is regarded as a significant characteristic of the school. However, uneven or scattered tobiaki may also be viewed as a defect indicating technical failure. The quantity, size, and distribution pattern of tobiaki become points of aesthetic evaluation. Though lacking rigid uniformity, tobiaki with a certain rhythm and visual coherence is highly praised as superior kesiki.
Yubasiri is a phenomenon where whiteness flows from the hamon (blade side) toward the jigane in a misty, hazy manner. The name derives from the appearance of the quenching heat (yu) seeming to "flow" toward the jigane. While tobiaki manifests as spots or islands, yubasiri typically presents as ribbon-like or flowing forms.
Metallurgically, yubasiri results from stepwise, continuous martensite transformation near the hardening boundary. The region between fully hardened martensite and unquenched structures (pearlite and ferrite) fills with intermediate "troostite" and "sorbite" transition phases, creating a white, hazy zone.
Yubasiri is particularly observed in koto (old sword) period blades, and many famous swords from the Kamakura era display yubasiri as beautiful kesiki. Hardening in eras before modern precision yielded less uniform boundary organization, manifesting as yubasiri. Paradoxically, technical "imperfection" generates aesthetic "kesiki"—a fascinating aspect of Japanese sword aesthetics.
Kinsuji appears as fine thread-like luminous lines within the hamon. When a polished blade is observed under light, golden or silvery thread-like lines are seen crossing the hamon. The name derives from "line of gold," and when it appears in a masterwork's hamon, it is cherished as one of the supreme kesiki.
The kinsuji mechanism involves the steel's organizational transition at the hamon boundary forming an exceptionally fine, distinct line. When carbon concentration changes sharply across an extremely narrow width near the hardening boundary, the interface manifests as a delicate line. After polishing, this line exhibits characteristic luster, shining golden or silver depending on observation angle.
Kinsuji is frequently seen in Soshu and Yamato school swords, and it is said to appear frequently in works by specific smiths—particularly renowned masters from the late Kamakura through Nanbokucho periods. Kinsuji found on Masamune's blades is especially renowned, sometimes called "Masamune's kinsuji." The presence, quality, and number of kinsuji affect a sword's grading, and blades with magnificent kinsuji are highly valued.
Inazuma resembles kinsuji but is distinguished by its non-linear form, curving and meandering as it crosses the hamon. As the name suggests, it resembles lightning streaking across the sky. Inazuma conveys more movement and dynamic visual impression than kinsuji.
The inazuma mechanism is fundamentally the same as kinsuji, but the organizational transition boundary traces a more complex path. When internal stress distribution during hardening is complex, or when the boundary passes through regions of uneven carbon distribution within the steel, curved inazuma forms more readily than straight lines.
Inazuma is said to appear particularly frequently in Soshu-school blades, notably in swords by Masamune's disciple "Sa," which are known for displaying magnificent inazuma. However, inazuma is not limited to specific regions or schools—it may appear in various blades depending on forging conditions. The quality, beauty of form, and density of inazuma determine appreciation value, and the expression "inazuma so beautiful one is captivated by it" represents one of the highest accolades for a masterwork.
The four kesiki—tobiaki, yubasiri, kinsuji, and inazuma—cannot be observed without proper lighting and viewing angle. In sword appreciation, angled lighting called "oshidashi" is fundamental, directing light from the blade's side to bring the jigane's surface texture and hamon details into relief.
Particularly kinsuji and inazuma have extremely fine structure; too-strong light causes them to appear blown-out white, while too-weak light renders them invisible. Using natural light (uniform illumination from a north-facing window) or specialized sword-viewing lights, subtle changes in angle reveal moments when these kesiki emerge.
In sword appraisal, observing these kesiki transcends mere aesthetic appreciation, serving as critical data for maker identification, regional attribution, and period estimation. Even identical-appearing tobiaki differs in form, density, and distribution pattern by maker, and experienced appraisers can discern these variations. Perceiving a swordsmith's spirit through unique hamon kesiki and conducting dialogue with the blade maker across centuries of time—this represents one of the profound delights of Japanese sword appreciation.
