Yet equally important is the blade's cross-sectional shape, what we call "blade construction." Blade construction refers to how forged steel is finished into a particular cross-section, and it directly determines the sword's cutting ability, strength, weight balance, and purpose. Even two swords of identical dimensions become entirely different objects to handle and behave differently in use if their construction differs.
Japanese swordsmiths have varied their construction techniques across different eras, regions, and according to client requests. In modern appreciation, this knowledge is indispensable—understanding blade construction reveals the historical context and creative intent behind a single blade.
The representative blade construction of Japanese swords is shinogi-zukuri. A ridge line called the "shinogi" runs along the blade's sides, and the cross-section forms a shape close to diamond. From the shinogi toward the edge runs the "shinogi-ji," while toward the spine runs the "mune-machi" and the "mune" (spine). This ridge line provides longitudinal rigidity to the blade, creating a structure strong against bending while keeping weight low.
Shinogi-zukuri is employed in the vast majority of uchigatana and tachi, seen widely from warring-states-period combat blades to Edo-period daimyo-class swords. In appraisal, the height and width of the shinogi serve as clues to identifying stylistic and period characteristics. For example, Bizen-den tachi typically have a relatively low shinogi that transitions smoothly, whereas Soshu-den works frequently feature "high shinogi" that stands sharply. Even the finest details of the shinogi become important indicators for regional attribution.
Hira-zukuri lacks a shinogi and possesses a literally flat cross-sectional structure. Both sides of the blade connect directly to the edge without a shinogi, resulting in a relatively thin, wedge-shaped cross-section. Compared to shinogi-zukuri, longitudinal rigidity is reduced, but on shorter blade lengths, strength presents no significant issue. For this reason, it became widely adopted for tantō and wakizashi.
Hira-zukuri tantō flourished from the late Kamakura through the Nanboku-chō period, with many large-scale pieces produced. During this era, each section of the blade features bold, undulating hardening patterns, and combined with hira-zukuri's clean lines, creates powerful beauty. Hira-zukuri tantō by Soshu-den masters such as Masamune and Yukimitsu exemplify this tradition, with numerous pieces designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.
Hira-zukuri also offers advantages for observing steel grain and surface character. Without the ridge step, the grain and "utsuri" (reflection) of the steel are easily observed head-on, making it an accessible construction for appreciation.
A variant of hira-zukuri is also known: shōbu-zukuri (iris-leaf construction). The shinogi runs from the habaki to the point, and the blade takes on a slender iris-leaf form; it was favored for long wakizashi, its refined appearance harmonizing beautifully with formal samurai attire.
Kiriha-zukuri is positioned as a variation of shinogi-zukuri. Whereas standard shinogi-zukuri features the shinogi line running through the blade's middle, kiriha-zukuri positions the shinogi low, near the edge. As a result, the edge side assumes a steep angle, while the spine side forms a gentle, broad surface—an asymmetrical cross-section, in effect.
This construction is commonly found on tachi from the late Heian through early Kamakura periods and is one of the characteristic styles of the old-sword period (generally before Keichō). When deep-curved, long tachi combine with kiriha-zukuri, an ancient martial presence suited to mounted use is palpable. Examining surviving old tachi reveals transitional pieces that retain kiriha-zukuri characteristics while gradually shifting to shinogi-zukuri, offering fascinating insight into Japanese sword development.
Kata-kiriha-zukuri employs an asymmetrical structure where one side is hira-zukuri (no shinogi) and the other is kiriha-zukuri (with shinogi)—an extremely specialized construction. Observing the cross-section, one side spreads flat while the other presents a low ridge line. This construction is notably recognized from tantō by the late Kamakura master smith Kagemitsu of Bizen, and remains celebrated in appreciation circles as "Kagemitsu's kata-kiriha-zukuri."
As to why such an asymmetrical form exists, one theory suggests it intentionally restricts cutting direction, optimizing for specific use (or ritualized technique). In any case, it represents a construction prioritizing distinctive functional beauty over versatility. While some contemporary swordsmiths attempt kata-kiriha-zukuri, its difficulty means practitioners remain few, and it is treasured as a rare specialty.
The evolution of blade construction is not merely a matter of design fashion; it is deeply intertwined with changes in combat methods, social structure, and material technology.
From Heian through Kamakura—the age of mounted samurai—long tachi suited to overhead strikes from horseback were mainstream, and kiriha-zukuri or earlier shinogi-zukuri styles predominated. With the Nanboku-chō period came increasingly infantry-centered group combat and growing demand for shorter, mobile blades and tantō. This era saw hira-zukuri flourish.
By the Edo period, combat opportunities had sharply declined, and swords became emblems of samurai status. In construction, practical utility no longer reigned alone; beauty, rarity, and school tradition gained importance. While shinogi-zukuri remained dominant, specially commissioned tantō or fittings sometimes selected hira-zukuri or variant constructions for aesthetic harmony with their fittings.
Point shape likewise reflects the era. Fine, slender tachi of early-to-mid Kamakura featured "ko-kissaki" (small point, favored by the court), large tachi of Nanboku-chō featured "ō-kissaki" (large point), and armor-piercing combat blades of Muromachi selected "inokubi-kissaki" (boar's-neck point). Tantō could also feature an inward curve on the edge called uchi-zori, recognized in forms like the Kikuchi spear-type tantō as portable and defensive construction.
Observing blade construction best begins by confirming the shinogi's presence and position. A shinogi indicates either shinogi-zukuri or kiriha-zukuri; its absence indicates hira-zukuri. Examining the shinogi's height, width, and proportion within the overall blade allows one to estimate production period and school attribution.
When viewing Japanese swords in museums and galleries, intentionally observe from different angles—the edge side, spine side, and near-cross-sectional areas. As light changes, the shinogi line emerges more clearly, and the construction's three-dimensionality becomes apparent. Simultaneously, observe whether the steel's grain and blade hardening harmonize with the construction.
A Japanese sword is a complete artwork as a whole, and blade construction is its structural foundation. Understanding construction alongside profile, curvature, hardening pattern, and engravings deepens the narrative a single sword carries. Beginning with the question "What is this sword's blade construction?" opens the door to richer appreciation.
