The elegant arc traced by the blade is not merely an aesthetic design. The combat style of that era, whether mounted or on foot, the need for speed of draw, the characteristics of the iron used—all of these crystallize into the form of sori.
In sword appreciation, the technique of "reading sori" becomes the first clue for identifying a sword's era, origin, and school. This article systematically explains the types and measurement methods of sori, its characteristics by era, and evaluation criteria in appreciation.
Sori is measured as "the distance from the deepest point of the spine (mune) to the baseline on the edge side (the straight line connecting both ends of the blade)." In modern measurement, it is typically expressed in centimeters, generally ranging from 1–2 cm for standard uchigatana, with some oodachi reaching 3 cm or more.
Various dimensions of the blade are evaluated in conjunction with sori. As representative values for a typical uchigatana (mid-Edo period, blade length approximately 70 cm), the standard reference range for appraisal is: moto-haba (base width) 32–33 mm, saki-haba (tip width) 21–22 mm, moto-e (base thickness) 7–8 mm, saki-e (tip thickness) 5–6 mm, and sori 1.2–1.5 cm. Measurements that deviate significantly from this range suggest suri-age (re-polishing), later modification, or regional differences.
Quantitative Three-Part Measurement Model: As a practical procedure for determining the apex position of sori, the blade (the cutting edge excluding the tang) may be divided into three equal parts from root to tip. If the deepest point falls within the root-side third, it is classified as "koshi-zori" (waist curve); if in the central third, "naka-zori" (center curve); if in the tip-side third, "saki-zori" (tip curve). This procedure is effective when cross-referencing sword types recorded in appraisal certificates with actual specimens, and discrepancies between measurements and classification suggest later modification or re-polishing.
Sori is not simply a designed shape but emerges from the manufacturing process itself. Before quenching (yakiire), the sword smith applies "tsuchi-oki" (clay placement) to the blade, intentionally creating different cooling rates on the edge side and spine side. During quenching, the edge side contracts rapidly while the spine side cools gradually, and this difference in contraction generates the curved sori. Skilled smiths deliberately enter the water in a "reverse-curve" state, then adjust so that natural koshi-zori or naka-zori forms after rapid cooling. In other words, sori is the result of the sword smith's "skill in controlling the physical phenomenon of quenching," and the smith's technical level is clearly reflected in the finished sword's sori.
The true identity of this contraction difference lies in martensitic transformation. When rapid cooling causes the steel's crystal structure to undergo martensitic transformation on the edge side, there is approximately a 1% volume expansion, and this expansion generates bending stress toward the spine. The sword smith pre-shapes the blade into what is called "uchi-sori"—a curve in the reverse direction (with the edge side convex)—before quenching, then predictively controls the sori so that the desired koshi-zori or naka-zori forms from the martensitic expansion occurring during rapid cooling in water.
The name differs depending on where the deepest point of the curve is located.
Koshi-zori (waist curve): The deepest point of sori is located near the root (waist) of the blade. This is frequently seen in tachi from the late Heian period through the early Kamakura period. It is a characteristic feature common among tachi made by Kyoto smiths represented by "Yamashiro-mono," with an arch extending gradually across the entire blade in an elegant form.
Naka-zori (center curve) / Torii-zori (torii curve) · Kyo-zori (Kyoto curve): The deepest point of sori is located near the center of the blade. This appears frequently from the mid-Kamakura period onward, characterized by both practical ease of use and aesthetic balance. Commonly seen in swords of the "Soshu-den" school, this eventually develops into the standard form of later uchigatana.
Saki-zori (tip curve): The deepest point of sori shifts toward the tip (kissaki) side of the blade. This is seen in tachi made in the late Edo and shinshintouki periods in a retrospective style. It is said to reflect a shape intended for mounted use.
Saki-zori also attracts attention for its compatibility with iaido. In draws from the sashigata style (carrying with the edge facing upward), having the deepest point of sori on the tip side means that as the sword leaves the scabbard, the kissaki quickly faces forward. In iaido's fundamental techniques (ichimonji, kesagiri, etc.), this characteristic is said to work to the practitioner's advantage, and saki-zori is sometimes chosen in modern custom blades made for iaido training.
Funbari (firm stance): Strictly speaking, not a type of sori, but a shape in which the difference between moto-haba (base width) and saki-haba (tip width) is large, with the root broad and tapering toward the tip. Common in tachi from the mid-Kamakura period, having "funbari" is highly valued as a characteristic of koto (old swords).
Uchi-zori (inner curve): The opposite of normal sori, in which the spine (mune) side is convex. Also called "gyaku-zori" (reverse curve). Seen in tanto and yoroi-doshi (armor-piercing swords), this special curve is suited to thrusting through gaps in armor. In the context of appreciation, swords bearing the marking "uchi-zori" are extremely rare, and when present, they directly lead to the identification of origin and purpose—a significant feature.
Japanese swords began to feature sori around the late Heian period (10th century). Prior "jokouto" (ancient swords) were straight blades.
During the late Heian and early Kamakura periods, when mounted warriors were the main force, tachi were hung from the waist for carrying (tachi-haki). In this style, with the edge facing downward when suspended from the waist, "koshi-zori"—with its arc emanating from the waist—aligned with ease of drawing.
As typical examples, tachi made by the Sanjo school and Awata-guchi school of Yamashiro were slender with pronounced koshi-zori, and the hada and hamon often featured hosoku-suguha (fine straight hamon) or komidaré (small random pattern). These are called "ko-yu" (ancient excellence) and are highly valued in appreciation.
Following the Mongol invasions (1274 and 1281) in the late Kamakura period, swords transformed into more robust forms in response to "foot combat in group warfare" and "advances in protective equipment."
Swords from this period, represented by Masamune and Sadamune of the Soshu-den, are evaluated at the highest level as a "fusion of strength and beauty."
The Nanboku-Cho period (14th century) was an era when "unusually large swords" were made. Oodachi and nodachi—with extraordinarily broad bodies and thick kasane (blade thickness)—appeared. Sori was often deep, and it was not uncommon for sori to exceed 3 cm.
Many swords from this period were later "suri-age" (re-polished) and shortened in later eras, resulting in many cases where the original sori was significantly lost.
From the mid-Muromachi period onward, the "uchigatana" became the mainstream, replacing the "tachi." Uchigatana are carried with the edge facing upward, suspended from the waist in the sashi-soé style of carrying.
As the method of carry changed, so did the functional requirements for sori. Some argue that when carrying with the edge facing upward, shallower sori is easier to draw. Uchigatana from the Sengoku period showed a tendency toward overall shallower sori.
Additionally, swords of the suekoto and shintouki periods, exemplified by "mass-production Keicho-touki," emphasized practicality, resulting in many with uniform, shallow sori.
The Edo period continued in peace, and swords took on more the aspect of "works of art and formal dress" rather than "weapons." This change influenced sori as well.
Shintouki period (early Edo): Smiths in Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo competed to explore their own distinctive "sugata" (form). Kanbun-shintouki, made by Osaka shintouki smiths, featured slender blades with shallow sori and an refined form. This responded to the demand of the time for "formal dress swords" among the samurai class.
Shinshintouki period (late Edo): Suishinshi Masahide and others advocated "return to ancient sword aesthetics," consciously attempting to restore the robust forms of the Kamakura and Nanboku-Cho periods. Under this influence, late Edo also saw the creation of "retrospective tachi" with pronounced koshi-zori and broad bodies.
The "sugata" (form) of a sword refers to the comprehensive visual impression encompassing the entire sword's proportions, sori, and the flow of the hada. Sori is the central element of this "sugata."
What is sought in the sori of excellent swords:
When ancient swords (particularly oodachi from the Nanboku-Cho period) are "suri-age" (re-polished) and shortened in later eras, the original koshi-zori may decrease or disappear, appearing as "naka-zori" or "shallow sori." Discerning this "change in sori following re-polishing" is also part of developing connoisseurship.
The method of re-polishing the nakago (tang), the presence of kin-suji (golden streaks), and the presence or absence of signatures serve as evidence of re-polishing.
The numerical value of sori is expressed as the distance measured from a straight line connecting the mune-machi (the boundary between the spine side of the blade and the tang) and the kissaki (tip), measured at the point where the distance from this line to the spine is greatest. When confirming with an actual sword, place the blade horizontally and align string or a straight ruler with the mune-machi and kissaki, then measure the maximum gap to the spine.
This numerical value is recorded as "sori" in centimeters on the gun and sword registration certificate issued by the prefectural board of education, and along with blade length, it serves as fundamental data for estimating a sword's sugata. When considering a purchase, simply observing the ratio between the sori value and blade length on the registration certificate can give you an approximation of whether the form is that of a tachi or a shallow form like Kanbun-shintouki.
Because the depth of sori varies significantly by era and type, "averages" are merely guidelines, but general trends are as follows:
Even with the same blade length, if sori exceeds 2 cm, it is generally described in appreciation as "deep sori," and if it falls below 1 cm, as "shallow sori."
Swords with deep sori are often ancient swords retaining tachi form or shinshintouki revivals copying ancient swords, giving an impression of elegance and courtly beauty. By contrast, the representative of swords with shallow sori is the Kanbun-shintouki of the early Edo period, said to be a form adapted to the swordcraft (dojo swordcraft emphasizing thrusting) of peaceful times. During the late Edo shinshintouki period, the kinnō-tō (loyalist swords) with shallow, long-bladed curves became fashionable, and once again the temper of the age was reflected in sori.
In this way, the depth of sori is not a matter of superiority or inferiority but a record of the era's manner of combat and aesthetic sensibility. In appraisal too, the combination of "depth of sori × location of sori's center" becomes the first step in period determination.
The sori of a Japanese sword is testimony to an era, showing "what combat style the sword was made for, and with what philosophy, in the era of its creation." While it cannot be simply said that "deep sori = old" or "shallow sori = new," reading the type, depth, and position of sori yields major clues in determining a sword's era, origin, and school.
The next time you appreciate a sword, try starting by observing the sori of the entire blade. The craftsman's intent and the memory of an era encoded in that curve should gradually come into view.
