The elegant arc that the blade traces is far more than a mere aesthetic design. The combat style of the era, whether mounted or on foot, the demand for swift drawing, the characteristics of the iron used—all of these crystallize into the form we call curvature.
In sword appreciation, the skill of "reading the curvature" serves as the first clue to identifying a blade's era, place of origin, and school of forging. This essay provides a systematic explanation from the classification and measurement of curvature, through characteristics by era, to the evaluation standards used in appreciation.
Curvature is measured as "the distance from the deepest point of the ridge to the reference line on the blade side (a line connecting the two ends of the blade)." In modern measurement, this is typically expressed in centimeters, ranging from approximately 1–2 cm in standard katanas to 3 cm or more in large longswords.
The dimensions of each section of the blade are evaluated in conjunction with curvature. For a typical katana (mid-Edo period, blade length approximately 70 cm), the standard reference values are: base width 32–33 mm, tip width 21–22 mm, base thickness 7–8 mm, tip thickness 5–6 mm, and curvature 1.2–1.5 cm. Significant deviation from these ranges suggests prior grinding, later modification, or a different place of origin.
Quantitative Three-Part Measurement Model: A practical method for determining the apex of curvature is to divide the blade (the cutting edge portion, excluding the tang) into three equal parts from base to tip. If the deepest point falls within the basal third, it is classified as "heel sori"; if in the middle third, "middle sori"; if in the apical third, "tip sori." This method is also effective when cross-referencing blade documentation with the actual object, and a discrepancy between measured values and stated classification suggests prior modification or grinding.
Curvature is not simply a designed form but rather emerges from the manufacturing process itself. Before hardening (yakiire), the bladesmith applies clay tempering (tsuchioki) to the blade, intentionally varying the cooling rate between the edge side and the ridge side. During hardening, the edge side undergoes rapid cooling and contraction, while the ridge side cools more gradually; this difference in contraction generates the curved shape. Master bladesmiths deliberately introduce a reverse curve before water quenching, then adjust the blade so that the desired heel or middle sori forms naturally after rapid cooling. In other words, curvature results from the bladesmith's skill in "controlling the physical phenomenon of hardening," and the final blade's curvature directly reflects the craftsman's technical level.
The basis of this contraction difference is martensitic transformation. When the crystal structure of steel undergoes martensitic transformation through rapid cooling of the edge, the volume expands by approximately 1%, and this expansion creates bending stress toward the ridge. Before hardening, the bladesmith pre-curves the blade in the opposite direction—a technique called "uchi-sori" (edge-outward pre-curve)—so that the martensitic expansion occurring during water quenching produces the desired heel or middle sori. The bladesmith thus achieves predictive control over curvature formation.
The name of the curvature varies depending on "where the deepest point is located."
Heel Sori (koshi-zori): Curvature with its deepest point near the base of the blade. Commonly seen in longswords from the late Heian through early Kamakura periods. This is a characteristic feature of longswords made by Kyoto smiths, exemplified by "Yamashiro-mono" (Yamashiro-school blades), displaying an elegant form in which the arch toward the edge distributes gently across the entire blade.
Middle Sori (naka-zori) / Torii Sori / Kyoto Sori: Curvature with its deepest point near the center of the blade. Appearing frequently from the mid-Kamakura period onward, it is characterized by the synthesis of practical usability and aesthetic balance. Commonly seen in blades of the Soshu tradition, it evolved into the standard form for later katanas.
Tip Sori (saki-zori): Curvature with its deepest point shifted toward the tip of the blade. Seen in longswords made in the retro style during the late Edo and New-New-Sword periods. It is understood to be a form designed with mounted use in mind.
Tip sori also deserves attention for its compatibility with iaido. When drawing from an edge-up mounting style, the deepest point of curvature positioned toward the tip means that as the blade exits the scabbard, the tip quickly orients forward. This characteristic is said to be advantageous in fundamental iaido techniques, and tip sori is sometimes chosen for modern blades intended for iaido practice.
Funbari: Strictly speaking, not a type of curvature, but rather a form in which the difference between base width and tip width is pronounced, with the base broad and the tip tapering. Common in Kamakura mid-period longswords, "possessing funbari" is highly valued as a characteristic of old blades.
Inner Sori (uchi-zori): Reverse of the standard curvature, with the ridge side forming the convex. Also called "reverse sori." Found on short blades and armor-piercing blades, it is a specialized curvature suited for insertion into armor gaps for thrusting attacks. Blades bearing the "inner sori" designation are extremely rare in the collector's market, and when present, the feature directly leads to identification of origin and purpose.
Japanese bladed weapons are believed to have developed curvature in the late Heian period (around the 10th century). Prior to this, "ancient swords" (jōko-tō) were straight.
During the Heian period through the early Kamakura, when mounted warriors were the mainstay, longswords were worn suspended from the waist. In this configuration, with the edge facing downward, the "heel sori" that curved from the base aligned naturally with ease of drawing.
The longswords made by Yamashiro schools such as the Sanjo school and the Awatauchi school exemplify this period: they are slender, possess pronounced heel sori, and display fine straight-edge patterns or tight wave patterns. These blades are called "ko-yū" and are highly valued by collectors.
Following the Mongol invasions (1274 and 1281), in the late Kamakura period, swords evolved into a sturdier form to accommodate "foot combat in group warfare" and "advances in armor."
Blades from this period, exemplified by Masamune and Sadamune of the Soshu tradition, are held in the highest regard for their "union of strength and elegance."
The Nanboku-chō period (14th century) was an era of extraordinarily large swords. "Great longswords" and "field swords"—with extreme width and considerable thickness—emerged. Many possessed deep curvature, with examples exceeding 3 cm in sori not uncommon.
Many blades from this period were later shortened through grinding, and original curvature was often substantially lost in the process.
From the mid-Muromachi period onward, the "katana" superseded the longsword as the dominant form. The katana was worn edge-up in a waist-mounting style.
With the change in mounting style came altered functional demands on curvature. Some argue that when worn edge-up, shallower curvature facilitates drawing. Sengoku-period katanas displayed a general trend toward shallow curvature.
Blades of the late-old-sword and new-sword periods, exemplified by mass-produced Keichō-era blades, display uniformly shallow curvature as a result of prioritizing practicality.
The Edo period was characterized by lasting peace, shifting the sword from a "weapon" toward roles as "art object" and "formal wear." This shift influenced curvature as well.
New-Sword Period (Early Edo): Bladesmiths in Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo competed to develop their own distinctive "form." The "Kanbun new-sword" made by Osaka smiths featured slender blades with shallow curvature and refined form, responding to the samurai's demand for "formal-wear swords" of the period.
New-New-Sword Period (Late Edo): Suishinshi Masahide and others advocated for "return to old-sword aesthetics," consciously attempting to restore the massive forms of the Kamakura and Nanboku-chō periods. Under this influence, the late Edo period saw the production of "retro-style longswords" with strong heel sori and broad form.
A sword's "form" encompasses the overall visual impression including the blade's proportions, curvature, and the flow of the blade pattern. Curvature is a central element of this "form."
What is demanded of curvature in excellent blades:
When old blades—particularly great longswords from the Nanboku-chō period—were shortened through grinding, the original heel sori could diminish or disappear, making the blade appear to have "middle sori" or "shallow sori." Detecting this "post-grinding change in curvature" is part of a connoisseur's eye.
Evidence of prior grinding appears in the grinding marks on the tang, the presence of age lines, and the absence or alteration of signatures.
The curvature of a Japanese sword is testimony to the era, revealing "the combat style for which it was forged, and the philosophy that guided its making, in the era of its creation." While one cannot simply say "deep sori = old, shallow sori = new," reading the type, depth, and location of curvature provides crucial clues for determining a blade's era, origin, and school.
When appreciating a sword next, begin by observing the curvature of the entire blade. The craftsman's intent and the era's memory encoded in that curve will gradually come into view.
