After tamahagane has been repeatedly folded and forged, only through yaki-ire does a sword finally acquire true sharpness and durability. For sword smiths, yaki-ire is the pinnacle of craftsmanship, controlling the very soul of the sword.
The principle of yaki-ire lies in rapidly cooling steel that has been heated to high temperature, thereby fixing its microstructure. The temperature control and timing at this moment greatly influence the properties of the finished sword. Even a difference of just a few degrees in temperature or a variation in cooling speed affects the sword's hardness, resilience, and the beauty of its hamon.
First, the sword smith heats the steel until it glows red. This process requires skill in distinguishing color. Dark flames, bright red, pale scarlet—at each stage the steel's microstructure differs. It is the smith's experience to judge by color whether the proper temperature for yaki-ire has been reached.
Once the temperature is right, cooling begins in earnest. The smith rapidly immerses the blade in a prepared cooling medium (traditionally water, often oil in modern times). The speed and depth of this cooling determines the formation of the hamon. By cooling the edge and spine at different rates, rather than cooling the entire blade uniformly, the beautiful pattern of the hamon is created.
Even during cooling, the craftsman's eyes never leave the blade. He perceives the progress of cooling from the sound, smell, and the rising steam. An experienced sword smith uses all five senses to grasp the optimal moment.
What is created as a result of yaki-ire is the "hamon" (edge pattern). The hamon is the wavy or linear pattern visible along the edge of the blade, a trace of the microstructure being fixed during the cooling process of yaki-ire.
Various types of hamon such as suguha, choji, and gunome are created by the combination of yaki-ire technique and steel composition. The Yamato tradition features deep hardening and mostly suguha patterns, while the Soshu tradition is characterized by shallow hardening and complex hamon patterns. These differences arise from different yaki-ire techniques particular to each school.
The beauty of the hamon is not mere decoration but proof that the yaki-ire was successful. A sword with beautiful hamon means it was precisely hardened at the proper temperature, resulting in superior sharpness and durability.
Yaki-ire is an extremely difficult process. A difference of merely a few degrees in temperature greatly changes the properties of the finished sword. If the temperature is too low, the sword becomes too soft and the edge chips quickly. If the temperature is too high, the sword becomes too hard and brittle, prone to breaking.
Particularly dangerous is "cracking." If temperature changes suddenly during yaki-ire cooling, internal stress develops in the steel, and invisible cracks may form. These cracks may appear after completion, leading to the disaster of the sword suddenly breaking during use. To prevent such failures, sword smiths undergo years of training.
In ancient times, swords that failed during yaki-ire were entirely discarded as irreparable. Even today, repairing a sword that failed during yaki-ire is extremely difficult.
During the kotou (ancient sword) period, the fuels and cooling media used were limited. Heated only by charcoal fire and cooled with water—under these conditions, yaki-ire techniques were developed to achieve maximum sharpness.
During the shintou (new sword) period of the Edo era, yaki-ire techniques also evolved. With more stable heating methods and refined cooling media, higher-quality yaki-ire could be achieved more reliably. However, at the same time, distinctive and bold yaki-ire techniques declined.
According to modern research, kotou yaki-ire was the result of employing the highest techniques within limited conditions. The complexity and beauty of kotou hamon is evidence of smiths' trial and error under difficult conditions.
Polishing (kensha) brings out the beauty of the finished sword. The polisher performs the work of bringing out the hamon created by yaki-ire. Through polishing, the hamon becomes more vivid, and the true value of the sword is finally revealed.
At the same time, polishing is an important opportunity to assess the success of yaki-ire. From the shape of the hamon, one can infer the temperature, timing, and cooling method during yaki-ire.
In modern sword research, attempts are being made to scientifically measure the temperature and cooling speed of yaki-ire and reproduce kotou yaki-ire. However, due to material changes over time and the lack of accurate records of historical tools, complete reproduction is currently difficult.
Yet through scientific analysis, the excellence of kotou yaki-ire is being revealed one discovery at a time. How smiths achieved such precise yaki-ire with only imperfect measuring instruments is truly remarkable.
Yaki-ire is the core sword-forging process of Japanese swords. It is the crystallization of advanced craftsmanship and empirical knowledge, performed under the tension where even slight failure is not permitted. The reason many famous kotou swords maintain their superior sharpness and beauty over a thousand years is the high degree of perfection in their yaki-ire.
When appreciating a sword, by observing the hamon, one can sense how skillfully the smith executed this yaki-ire.
