However, this small part is truly the "unsung hero" supporting both the function and aesthetics of the Japanese sword.
The habaki is fitted snugly from the back edge line (munematchi) of the blade to the habaki base (habakiremoto), serving three key functions.
The first function is to "secure the sword to the scabbard." The scabbard's mouth (koiguchi) and habaki engage through friction, preventing the sword from slipping out on its own. The precision of this fit determines whether the sword produces "scabbard noise" (sayanari). A well-made habaki fits snugly with a quiet "click" when drawn into the scabbard, stays put even when inverted, and slides smoothly from the scabbard when unsheathed.
The second function is to "secure the handguard." The habaki contacts the rim of the handguard's blade-tang hole (nakagohana) and, together with the setppa, stabilizes the handguard on the blade tang (nakago). By being sandwiched between the habaki and setppa, the entire sword mounting (koshirae) functions as an integrated structure.
The third function is to "protect the blade." By covering the base of the blade, the habaki prevents the steel structure created through folding and forging from being directly exposed to external impact and moisture.
Setppa (切羽) are thin metal washers placed on both sides of the handguard that adjust gaps between the handguard and habaki, and between the handguard and hilt. By precisely adjusting the material, thickness, and shape, any looseness in the entire sword mounting is eliminated.
The silver metalsmith (shirogane-shi) is a craftsperson who specializes in metal fittings for sword mountings, including habaki, setppa, small blade (kozuka), and hair pin (kogai). The term "white silver" (shirogane) refers to silver or silver alloys, and the profession's name is said to derive from the historical use of silver as the primary material.
The primary materials used in modern habaki are as follows.
Gold (kin): The highest-quality material. Solid gold habaki (kinmuku) were used for daimyo-style sword mountings and swords dedicated to shrines. Gold is highly malleable and easy to work, but because of its high cost, modern habaki typically use gold plating (gold overlay on base metal).
Silver (gin): The traditional primary material and the source of the craftsman's name. Pure silver is too soft, so silver-copper alloys such as Sterling Silver 925 are commonly used. Silver has a beautiful luster, and polished silver habaki contrast beautifully with the blade's surface steel.
Shakudō (赤銅): A copper alloy containing a small amount of gold (approximately 4%), which exhibits a deep black-purple color when blackened. It is often used to achieve "color harmony" in sword mountings coordinated with handguards and ferrules made of the same material.
Shibuichi (四分一): A copper alloy containing approximately 25% silver with a restrained gray tone. It was favored in refined sword mountings preferred by the warrior class.
The habaki production process generally follows these steps. First, sheet metal of the chosen material is forged and the interior is precisely shaped to match the blade's cross-section. Next, the habaki is temporarily fitted to the blade and fine-tuned by repeated testing and adjustment until the fit is perfect. The exterior is then decorated and polished using chasing, filing, and burnishing techniques.
Representative surface decoration patterns include the following. "Vertical groove" (tatehi)—vertical grooves—is the simplest and most common design. "Single line" (ichimonji)—a single horizontal dividing line—is an elegant traditional design. Chased patterns of dragons, plums, and bamboo are common on custom pieces. Gold plating (kinzakase) is a technique of bonding gold foil or thin gold sheet to base metal, creating a luxury appearance nearly equivalent to solid gold.
In ancient swords, there were periods when components equivalent to habaki did not exist. In the Heian period, ceremonial swords (tachi) were equipped with intricate decorative fittings such as "Hyogo chain," but habaki was not standardized as an independent component until the Kamakura period and beyond.
During the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, sword makers sometimes produced their own habaki, but in the Edo period the specialization of sword mounting work advanced, and the profession of "silver metalsmith" became established. Multiple silver metalsmiths existed in Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto during the Edo period, supporting the sword-making industry alongside sword makers, scabbard makers, and polishers.
Among notable schools of silver metalsmiths, the "Hirata family" lineage of Edo undertook metalwork for sword mountings in general and included habaki work. Many daimyo also retained craftsmen who continued making habaki for generations within their domains.
In modern times, the silver metalsmith is one of the trades related to Japanese sword making that faces the most severe shortage of successors. According to a survey by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the number of currently active silver metalsmiths is smaller than that of sword makers and polishers, and in some regions a situation has arisen where "in the absence of silver metalsmiths, sword makers must make their own habaki."
The Japanese Sword Conservation and Preservation Society (NBTHK) has included the silver metalsmith profession in its list of officially recognized "preservation techniques" and provides support for successor training. However, in practice, the long training period required for mastery and income instability serve as barriers to entry, making it difficult for younger generations to enter the profession.
On the other hand, some modern silver metalsmiths are incorporating advanced metalworking technologies—such as CAD-based mold design and laser hardening—while fusing them with traditional finishing techniques. While the "precise internal fit" of habaki requires much hand work to achieve, streamlining the exterior forming process through modern machine work is becoming a realistic option for contemporary silver metalsmiths.
The habaki may be the most inconspicuous part of an entire sword. Yet the precision with which a sword fits into its scabbard, the quality that stabilizes the handguard and hilt, and the durability that protects the blade's base—all depend on the habaki and the skill of the silver metalsmith. Bringing attention to this small metal component that silently supports the beauty of the Japanese sword, and to the silver metalsmith who creates it, is an indispensable perspective for understanding the full picture of Japanese sword culture.
