The blade surface retains fine irregularities, distortions, and scale (oxidized skin) created by forging and quenching, and the curve of the blade may not yet be fully set.
It is at this stage that sengake (鏟がけ) is performed. The 'sen' (鏟) is a special scraping tool with a thin, flat blade edge, made of iron or steel. By applying this to the blade and pushing or pulling it, excess surface is scraped away and the shape and curve of the blade are adjusted—this rough-finishing stage is called sengake.
Scrapers come in multiple forms depending on their purpose. There is the 'flat scraper' (ひらせん) for scraping the flat (ひら) of the blade, the slender 'edge scraper' (きわせん) for processing the edges where the blade junctures meet the flat surfaces, and the 'shinogi scraper' (しのぎせん) used for shaping the shinogi (鎬) ridge.
The work is performed with the blade fixed to a bench block (だいぎ), with the smith gripping the scraper in both hands and pressing in a consistent direction. Because the blade has high hardness immediately after quenching and files will not bite easily, adjustment of the scraper's pressure angle and speed is critical. Applying excessive force creates microscopic scratches on the blade, which affect subsequent polishing stages.
When the sword-making process is organized in order, sengake is positioned as follows:
The essential role of sengake is to ready the blade's shape to 'a state suitable for polishing' before the polisher (研磨師) takes over, and it constitutes part of the smith's final finishing stage.
After quenching, the curve of the blade is ultimately nearly fixed, but subtle differences in furnace or water-tank temperature, blade thickness distribution, and cooling rate can cause the curve to emerge stronger or weaker than intended.
Through sengake, by adjusting the amount of material removed from the shinogi, flat, and spine of the blade, the balance of residual stress can be fine-tuned and the curve slightly adjusted. However, major shape corrections are not made during sengake; it remains within the scope of 'fine-tuning for polishing.' Significant deviations in curve are recognized as a manufacturing issue and may lead to a decision to remake the blade.
A process sometimes confused with sengake is 'file-finishing' (やすりがけ). The file (やすり) is a file-type tool that finely scrapes the surface and is used for finishing with greater precision than the scraper. It is used primarily for finishing the tang (なかご) and fine shaping of the shinogi ridge, and thus has a different role from the scraper used for rough-shaping the blade's flat surfaces.
In the process sequence, file-finishing typically follows sengake, with both operations positioned within a staged progression from coarse to fine.
The scraper marks themselves are erased from the surface through subsequent polishing. Yet the results certainly remain in the 'form' of the finished sword. When viewing, it is worthwhile to direct attention to these three points:
The precision of such forming is not born from the polisher's skill alone; it is supported by the groundwork of the preceding stage—the meticulous shaping processes of the smith, including sengake. By directing attention not only to the hamon (刃文) and jigane (地鉄), but also to the 'flow of lines,' one can sense the craftsman's work in stages that remain hidden from view.
In contemporary sword-making, sengake continues to be practiced. While some workshops may use power tools supplementarily during the rough-shaping stage, the final adjustments that determine the curve and substance of the blade are typically performed through traditional hand work relying on tactile feel. Though tooling has changed with the times, the essential nature of the process—'to finalize the blade's shape before handing it to the polisher'—remains unchanged.
Moreover, as a scraper is used, its edge wears; the smith must hone and maintain the scraper's edge himself. Maintaining one's tools is part of the work—this is a principle common to many forms of hand craftsmanship.
Despite its deceptively modest appearance, sengake demands long years to master. Because the combination of pressure, angle, and speed of the scraper directly affects blade quality, it requires intuitive mastery.
A master smith's apprentice spends the first years under their teacher on fundamental forging, then gradually takes on auxiliary finishing work. It is not unusual for an apprentice to require 5 to 10 years from apprenticeship before being trusted to perform sengake independently.
Some smiths express it this way: 'The way you apply the scraper changes the polisher's workload.' This speaks to how carefully the preparation work is completed before handing over to the polisher ultimately determines the quality of the finished sword. Sword-making is a collaborative art form completed through many craftsmen's coordination, and sengake can be said to be the quiet yet vital stage that handles this baton pass.
