The roughness, density, and aggregation state of these particles give rise to two fundamental blade pattern qualities: nie-deki (coarse-particle pattern) and nioi-deki (fine-particle pattern).
While modern electron microscopy and metallurgical analysis have clarified the formation mechanism of the hamon, sword-smiths developed an empirical understanding of the relationship between these two qualities and their corresponding forging techniques through centuries of experience. Understanding nie and nioi is one of the most essential foundations for appreciating Japanese swords.
Nie refers to a structure in which martensite particles aggregate in a relatively large and coarse state. To the naked eye, the characteristic appearance of nie is granular white particles that sparkle along the blade edge.
To observe this properly, examine the sword under soft natural light from a window or specialized lighting rather than direct fluorescent light—this reveals the three-dimensional quality more clearly. When nie appears with large, distinct granules, it is called ara-nie (coarse nie) and conveys a bold, dramatic impression. Conversely, when nie appears more uniform and finely distributed, it is called ko-nie (small nie) and creates an orderly, refined blade pattern.
The formation of nie is significantly influenced by the cooling rate during the hardening process. Rapid cooling (determined by water temperature and cooling duration) tends to accentuate nie and connects to the technical tradition that Soshu-den sword-smiths mastered.
Nioi refers to a state in which martensite particles are distributed extremely finely and uniformly. The particles are too small to distinguish individually, and the blade edge appears as a white haze, as if shrouded in mist.
The characteristic of nioi is that the blade pattern appears to undulate gently when observed while moving the light source. Rather than the granular quality of nie, the entire blade edge emerges as a thin white band. The term nioi-guchi describes the clarity and tightness of this blade edge appearance.
Nioi is primarily found in Bizen-den swords. The toji-ba (clove pattern) created by Osafune-ha sword-smiths, in particular, is renowned for its beauty based on nioi. When nioi appears uniform and tight, it is described as having a "bright nioi-guchi" and is considered the mark of high-quality Bizen swords.
In actual swords, purely "nie alone" or "nioi alone" is relatively rare; in most cases, the two intermingle. The special phenomena created by this intermingled state are kinsuji (golden lines) and sunagashi (sand-like flow).
Kinsuji: The accumulation of elongated, shining lines of nie within the blade pattern. These are phenomena created by areas of complex blade pattern change or subtle local temperature variations during the hardening process. Swords with abundant kinsuji are said to have rich hataraki (activity) and are highly valued by connoisseurs.
Sunagashi: Fine nie particles distributed in a band-like flow along the blade pattern. Commonly seen in Soshu-den and Nanboku-cho period blades, it is an important element that imparts dynamism to the blade pattern.
The abundance of such hataraki is considered proof of a superior blade pattern and serves as an important criterion in connoisseurship.
Different schools exhibit clear tendencies in how they employ nie and nioi.
Soshu-den (Sagami Province): Characterized by nie-deki. Ara-nie and large nie granules stand out along the blade edge, and nie also appears in the blade surface as jigane nie (ground nie). This is the bold technical characteristic established by master smiths such as Okazaki Masamune and Yoshihiro.
Bizen-den (Bizen Province): Based on nioi-deki, with the nioi-guchi of the toji-ba (clove pattern) appearing clear and tight. Its characteristic is the uniform and orderly blade pattern beauty established by masters such as Osafune Mitsutada, Nagamitsu, Kanemitsu, and Noriimitsu.
Yamashiro-den (Yamashiro Province): Characterized by gentle blade patterns that blend ko-nie with nioi. The Awataguchi Yoshimitsu and Tosiro lineages are known for their delicate blade patterns described as "nioi-dominant with ko-nie accents."
Yamato-den (Yamato Province): Predominantly straight blades with clean blade patterns that blend nie into nioi. Representative examples include the Tegaki and Taima schools.
The temperature and cooling rate that a sword-smith employs during hardening are the most critical factors in determining the balance between nie and nioi. High-temperature hardening and rapid cooling tend to develop nie, while low-temperature hardening and gradual cooling promote the formation of nioi.
However, as contemporary sword-smiths testify, this control does not always proceed according to theory. Countless variables—the composition of the steel, water temperature, furnace conditions, seasonal ambient temperature—intertwine, resulting in different outcomes with each hardening. The unpredictability of the hardening process, also expressed as "the temper of the fire," is one of the elements that heightens the mystique of Japanese sword-making.
To decipher the beauty of nie and nioi is not merely to acquire connoisseurship knowledge, but to touch upon the essential allure of Japanese swords—the interplay of chemical reactions between iron and fire, woven together with the craftsmanship of the master.
