The coarseness, density, and aggregation state of these particles give rise to two fundamental qualities of hamon: nioe-deki and nioi-deki.
In modern times, the mechanism of hamon formation has been elucidated through electron microscopy and metallurgical analysis, but sword craftsmen have experientially mastered the relationship between these two qualities and corresponding forging techniques through centuries of experience. Understanding the "nie" and "nioi" of hamon is one of the most important foundational pieces of knowledge for appreciating Japanese swords.
"Nie" refers to a structure in which martensite particles are gathered in a relatively large and coarse state. When viewed with the naked eye, the characteristic feature of nie is that white-shining particles appear "granular" along the blade edge.
When observing this, it is better to illuminate the sword with soft natural light from a window or specialized lighting rather than direct light from a fluorescent lamp, as this enhances the three-dimensional effect and makes it easier to see.
The formation of nie is greatly influenced by the cooling rate during quenching. Rapid cooling tends to accentuate nie, and this relates to the technical expertise that Soshu-den sword craftsmen excelled at.
"Nioi" refers to a state in which martensite particles are distributed extremely finely and uniformly. The particles are so small that individual particles cannot be distinguished, and the blade edge appears as a "haze-like" white mist.
The characteristic feature of nioi is that when the sword is observed while moving the light source, the hamon appears to undulate quietly. Unlike nie with its granular particle feel, the entire blade edge instead stands out as a thin white band. The expression "nioiguchi" refers to the clarity and tightness of how the blade edge appears in this way.
Nioi is mainly seen in Bizen-den swords. In particular, the choji-hamon created by Osafune-ha sword craftsmen is known for its beauty based on nioi. When nioi appears uniform and tight, it is described as "nioiguchi bright," and is considered a mark of superior Bizen blades.
In actual swords, states of "only nie" or "only nioi" are actually rare, and in most cases both are mixed. The special phenomena created by this mixed state are "kinsuji" and "sunagashi."
This abundance of "hataraki" is considered evidence of superior hamon quality and is an important evaluation item in authentication.
The use of nie and nioi varies distinctly by school.

The most significant factor in determining the balance of nie and nioi is what temperature and cooling rate the sword craftsman uses during quenching. High-temperature quenching and rapid cooling tend to develop nie, while low-temperature quenching and gradual cooling promote nioi formation.
However, as contemporary sword craftsmen testify, this control does not go according to theory. Numerous variables intertwine—steel composition, water temperature, furnace condition, seasonal temperature—and different results occur with each quenching. The uncertainty of quenching, also expressed as "the mood of the fire," is one element that heightens the mystique of Japanese sword production.
Understanding the beauty of nie and nioi is not merely the acquisition of authentication knowledge, but rather touching upon the essential charm of Japanese swords, woven by the chemical reaction of iron and fire and the skill of craftsmen.
