However, few people understand this in terms of concrete morphological data of sword form. Precisely grasping the morphological characteristics of Kamakura swords is the foundation of period authentication (estimating when a particular sword was made).
The blade morphology of the Kamakura period (1185-1333) can be understood as dividing into three major phases:
Shortly after the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate (late 12th to early 13th century), tachi swords largely inherited forms from the Late Heian period. However, against the backdrop of social change brought by the rise of the warrior government, demand for blades expanded in both quantity and quality, and changes began to appear in morphology.
The most striking change is the expansion of width at the base and tip. In the Early Heian period, base width was roughly 2.5-2.8 cm, but in the Early Kamakura period it expanded to approximately 2.8-3.2 cm. This reflects a shift in the purpose of blades from "decorative status symbol" to a greater emphasis on "practical combat weapon."
The curve remained primarily koshi-zori, but showed a tendency to approach naka-zori somewhat compared to the Heian period. Overall length centered around 75 cm blade length, showing a trend toward larger size from a practical standpoint.
The Middle Kamakura period (mid-13th century) represents one of the most crucial turning points in the morphological history of Japanese swords. During this period, "inokubi-kissaki" becomes established.
Inokubi-kissaki is characterized by a relatively short kissaki (shallow kissaki length), with the tip width compressed into a short, powerful form. The fukura (roundness of the kissaki) is somewhat sparse and dried, deriving its name from the characteristic of being "short and compressed like a boar's neck." It is larger than the modest small kissaki of the Heian period, but not as lengthy as the large kissaki of the Northern and Southern Courts period——a moderate form unique to the Middle Kamakura period.
The practical reason for the development of inokubi-kissaki lies in the dual achievement of kissaki durability and cutting effectiveness in "kisha" (mounted archery) and slashing, the primary combat tactics of Kamakura warriors. Because inokubi-kissaki has sufficient meat thickness in the point, it is difficult to break and can also withstand the impact of cutting strikes.
Blade width expanded to approximately 3.0-3.4 cm at the base, establishing a magnificent taihai (form). Simultaneously, the motokasane (thickness of the blade near the habaki) was also substantial at approximately 0.7-0.9 cm, characterized by robust construction.
From the Middle Kamakura period onward, the curve of the blade gradually shifts to naka-zori——where the peak of curvature is located near the center of the blade.
The shift from koshi-zori to naka-zori is related to changes in drawing and slashing techniques from horseback during mounted warfare. While koshi-zori is advantageous for drawing from the scabbard, it is said that naka-zori more efficiently transmits force during slashing movements. With the accumulation of combat experience by warriors, forms that enhanced combat efficiency were progressively selected.
The curvature during the middle period was typically 1.8-2.5 cm. This was deeper than Early Heian (1.5-2.0 cm) but deeper than later uchigatana (0.5-1.8 cm). "Deep curvature" is a symbolic characteristic of tachi (large long swords).
During the Kamakura period, master smith groups of the five schools (Bizen, Yamashiro, Yamato, Soshu, and Mino) were active, and morphological characteristics differed by producing region.
Bizen School (Okayama): Relatively wide at the base with less difference to tip width (tip width/base width ratio 65-72%), with prominent inokubi-kissaki. The jigane is primarily itame and possesses the moisture-rich surface called "Bizen grain." The hamon is typically choiji-midare (clove-blossom pattern).
Yamashiro School (Kyoto): Compared to Bizen, it is slender and refined. The tip width/base width ratio of 60-68% shows slightly stronger tapering than Bizen. The jigane features fine ko-itame with the refined "Yamashiro grain." The hamon frequently shows suguha (straight edge) or small midare patterns.
Soshu School (Kanagawa): Developed at the doorstep of the Kamakura shogunate, the Soshu school is characterized by the most "magnificent" construction with both blade width and thickness (kasane) fully developed. The jigane characteristically features rough grain with mixed o-itame and o-mokume, and deep nie in the hamon.
These regional differences are noteworthy not merely as matters of preference, but as reflections of the social circumstances in which each regional smith group was situated (direct shogunate affiliation, proximity to court society, or rooted in regional warrior clans).
In understanding hamon, "nie" and "nioi" are important concepts.
Nie: A state where steel crystals (martensite) in the hardened edge appear coarse and distinct, sparkling like flames. Swords that are "nie-deki" abound in this.
Nioi: A state where nie is extremely fine and uniformly gathered, shining softly like mist. Swords that are "nioi-deki" are primarily composed of this.
From the Middle to Late Kamakura period, particularly Soshu school swords are characterized as "nie-deki." In contrast, the Bizen school is primarily "nioi-deki." Yamashiro school frequently exhibits an intermediate "nie-nioi" between the two.
This difference is thought to result primarily from differences in production methods (temperature control during hardening and differences in clay application methods), and serves as an important indicator for regional authentication.
The Mongol invasions (Bunei Campaign of 1274 and Koan Campaign of 1281) are said to have influenced Japanese tactics and weapons demand, but careful evaluation is necessary regarding their influence on blade morphology.
There is an explanation that practical experience from the Mongol invasions increased demand for "thrust-resistant tips," leading to changes in kissaki in the Late Kamakura period onward (a trend toward somewhat larger and pointed kissaki). However, scholars of blade studies disagree on this interpretation, with some cautious about attributing the primary cause of morphological change to the Mongol invasions.
What is clear is that during the Late Kamakura period (Kencho through Showa eras), the kissaki form was transitioning from inokubi toward chu-kissaki. This served as a stepping stone to the transition to the large kissaki of the Northern and Southern Courts period.
The tachi of the Kamakura period most directly embodies the influence that the establishment of the warrior government exerted on blade culture. The wide, magnificent form, the practical beauty of inokubi-kissaki, the abundantly refined hamon——these morphological characteristics are products of an era when practical combat experience and advanced forge-smithing techniques coincided.
In contemporary blade appraisal, these morphological characteristics become the most crucial judging criteria for distinguishing "Kamakura period or not." Rather than merely an impression of being "old" or "classical," grasping Kamakura swords as measurable morphological data becomes the foundation of discriminating judgment.
