* Image is for illustrative purposes only."Kachuudooshi (甲冑通し)" is a form of medieval Japanese short sword specifically designed to literally "penetrate armor (kachuutsu)." During close combat in the Nanboku-chō and Muromachi periods, situations frequently arose where striking from outside armor alone made it difficult to defeat an opponent. This gave rise to a technique of inserting a short blade into gaps in armor—at the seams, flanks, armpits, and openings in the face plate (menpo)—to overcome an opponent in areas with thinner defense. The blade shape that corresponded to this technique became the kachuudooshi.
Though often confused with yoroidooshi (鎧通し), kachuudooshi and yoroidooshi are sometimes employed as somewhat different concepts.
Yoroidooshi is often depicted in combat between samurai wearing full body armor (ōyoroi, dōmaru, and haramaki), used as a thrusting implement to deliver the killing blow to a defeated opponent, and is characterized by an extremely thin and hard blade. The cross-section shape is triangular or nearly diamond-shaped (hishigata), and the basic design was to insert into gaps rather than penetrate through armor plating.
Kachuudooshi, on the other hand, has a shape adapted for thrusting into narrow gaps where multiple protective elements cross, such as seams of hanging armor between the upper body protection (dōmaru, haramaki, etc.) and lower body parts (kusazuri, haitare, etc.). It tends to be somewhat wider and shorter, with the kissaki (tip) made sharp with a small kissaki.
The kachuudooshi blade has several features distinct from ordinary short swords and wakizashi.
Short blade length (hanaga): Generally, the blade length is less than 1 shaku (approximately 30cm), with many being around 8–9 sun (24–27cm). Longer blades reduce maneuverability in narrow gaps.
Special construction: Many have a hirazukuri or thinned shinogizukuri cross-section. The mune (back) is made thick to prevent breaking even when the edge strikes the edge of armor.
Shape of the kissaki (tip): Most have an extremely small or small kissaki, maximizing thrusting power with an acute angle. However, selection of the steel at the kissaki was also important to prevent snapping.
Little or no curve (sori): Kachuudooshi typically have very little curvature or are nearly straight. Curvature would make vertical thrusting into narrow gaps difficult.
Materials for kachuudooshi were chosen to achieve both thrusting power and toughness. A common design combined thin layers of kawaagane (outer steel) drawn from tamahagane with shinagane (core steel) with adjusted carbon content, with the tip hardened by quenching while the base (near the tang) retained toughness.
The hardening (yakiba) was often uniform from the hamon area to the kissaki, with the hamon (blade pattern) typically being suguha (straight) or small midare (irregular). Elaborate choji or togonome patterns prioritize aesthetics over functionality and do not suit the kachuudooshi's purpose.
The combat use of kachuudooshi can be inferred from grappling techniques recorded in modern martial arts and museum materials. The basic procedure is as follows:
The use of kachuudooshi, closely integrated with jujutsu and grappling techniques, is partially recorded as "short sword technique" in the treatises of later martial schools (such as Kitō-ryū and Yagyū-ryū).
Several short swords classified as kachuudooshi survive in museum collections and private collections, though the term "kachuudooshi" is often used conventionally by later researchers and collectors, and few examples were intentionally named as such by their makers. Classification is typically based on comprehensive assessment of blade dimensions, construction, and mounting style.
In the appreciation of nihontō, such utilitarian short swords represent examples that maximize "functionality over decoration" and can be regarded as the crystallization of practical aesthetics in which samurai staked their lives and deaths. The kachuudooshi embodies the fact that the nihontō is not merely an art object, but a precision engineering instrument designed to protect or take life.
