* Image is for illustrative purposes only.When appreciating a Japanese sword under appropriate lighting, fine glittering particles can be seen scattered throughout the "jigane" (ground steel)—the portion of the blade excluding the hamon (blade pattern) band. This phenomenon is called "jinie" (ground boil).
Jinie is not merely an optical phenomenon but reflects the state of the steel's metallurgical structure. Simply put, jinie is the phenomenon where fine martensite particles uniformly dispersed within the jigane catch light and appear to glitter.
To understand the formation of jinie, one must first grasp the carbon concentration distribution of tamahagane (jeweled steel), the material used for Japanese swords.
Tamahagane produced through tatara iron smelting does not possess uniform carbon distribution. While fold forging (ori-kaeshi tanren) homogenizes it to some degree, the final blade still contains fine variations in carbon concentration.
These fine variations in carbon concentration become crucial factors determining whether "jinie" develops during the quenching process.
During quenching, the temperature at which the steel is austenitized (brought to a high-temperature state where carbon dissolves into the iron lattice) typically ranges from 750–900°C (varying with carbon content).
The development of jinie depends critically on this "delicate temperature range."
The thickness pattern of the refractory clay (clay coating) that the swordsmith applies to the blade before quenching affects the distribution of jinie.
Edge side (thinly coated): Thin clay increases the rate of rapid cooling and promotes strong martensite transformation. This region becomes the "hamon band," where intense "nie" (boil) with strong luster concentrates.
Ground steel side (thickly coated): Thick clay creates gradual cooling. However, this is not "complete slow cooling"—heat drawn from the hamon band causes localized rapid cooling in the carbon-enriched zones of the jigane. This localized rapid cooling triggers martensite transformation, forming jinie.
In other words, jinie is the product of "the indirect rapid-cooling effect the hamon band imparts to the jigane." Clay coating design becomes the most critical parameter controlling jinie intensity and distribution.
The Soshu School (Soshu-den)—a sword-making tradition established during the mid-Kamakura through Nanboku-cho period and originating in Sagami Province (present-day Kanagawa Prefecture)—is renowned for an aesthetic of intense jinie and nie-in-the-blade called "nie-deki."
Blades forged by representative masters Masamune and Sadamune are filled with fine, glittering particles throughout the jigane "as if nie erupts from the skin," and this phenomenon became the most important aesthetic standard in later sword appraisal as "proof of the Soshu School."
Reproducing the nie-deki of the Soshu School remains one of the greatest challenges for contemporary swordsmiths, and "how uniformly and abundantly one can draw out jinie" serves as an indicator of a smith's technical mastery.
In evaluating jinie, sword appraisal employs the following distinctions.
Strong jinie (ko-wa-nie): Individual martensite particles are large, with a luster clearly visible to the naked eye. Frequently seen in celebrated Soshu-den blades, it possesses a magnificent beauty described as "the jigane is alive." However, if particles are too large, they may become structural weak points.
Fine jinie (ko-nie): Minute particles are densely dispersed, producing an overall soft, mist-like luster. Frequently seen in celebrated Bizen-den blades, it possesses an elegant beauty described as "the jigane is moistened."
Experienced swordsmiths control the intensity and uniformity of jinie by integrally adjusting the following multiple parameters.
Since the quality of jinie is determined by the subtle combination of all these parameters, "jinie control" is difficult to quantify or standardize, and becomes the holistic expression of the smith's experience and intuition. This is why the ability to draw out jinie's beauty to its fullest extent serves as one indicator of a swordsmith's highest technical achievement.
