To observe the ji-kane of an iron tsuba is to read how that tsuba was made and what history it has experienced. Through comprehensive observation of ko-iro (old patina), forging skin, and rust condition, the era, school, and preservation state all come to light. Experienced appraisers can often nearly pinpoint the origin and age from weight and surface texture the moment they take a tsuba in hand. Such is the eloquence with which ji-kane quality speaks.
The quality of iron varies greatly depending on era and origin. Medieval "tamahagane (たまはがね)" made from iron sand was rich in expression precisely because it contained many impurities, while Western iron (file iron, nanban iron) distributed from the early modern period onward had uniform composition and its own distinctive luster. Learning to read this material difference is the first step in ji-kane appreciation.
The forging skin (kitae-hada) that appears on the surface of an iron tsuba results from the number of hammer strikes, their direction, and temperature control during forging, directly reflecting the craftsman's technical level and working habits.

The rust (sabi) on an iron tsuba is one of the most important clues for era determination in appraisal, and is the first place experienced appraisers direct their gaze.
Black rust (kurosabi): Composed primarily of ferroferric oxide (Fe₃O₄), exhibiting a deep black to dark brown color as a stable protective layer. Naturally occurring black rust from aging protects iron from within and is excellent, uniformly seen on the surface of many ancient masterpieces. When touched lightly with a fingertip, it offers silky resistance.
Red rust (akasabi): Composed primarily of ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), exhibiting a reddish-brown color as corrosive rust. Generated through prolonged water contact, it erodes the base metal as it progresses. Extensive red rust indicates poor preservation conditions, though even in old pieces local red rust is not uncommon and can itself serve as evidence of long passage of time.
Ko-iro (ancient patina): A complex surface condition formed naturally over long periods, with black rust, tea rust, and ji-kane luster intricately mingled. Authentic ko-iro is extremely difficult to replicate artificially and becomes decisive evidence in authenticity determination. Particularly ko-iro remaining at the edges (fuchi) and within openwork holes is difficult to artificially process, making these areas prone to reveal differences from forgeries.
Artificial coloring (iro-age): Surface finishing chemically processing ko-iro is called "iro-age (色上げ)." Such work can often be identified by unnatural uniformity, strong luster, and discord with forging skin. Authentic ko-iro possesses insect-bite-like partial variation in tone, and its color subtly shifts with viewing angle.
Mastering representative ji-kane characteristics of each era and school greatly aids in attribution determination of unsigned tsubes.
Tsubes from the Old Blade Period (Heian through Muromachi): Few in number and precious, their ji-kane is generally thick with large, coarse forging skin. Ko-iro is deep and complex, sometimes revealing "ji-kei (地景)" where the iron's internal structure appears as reflection. Characterized by weight and simplicity, with construction prioritizing functionality over decoration evident in the ji-kane.
Higo Metalwork (Early Edo onward): Works by the Kumamoto domain's official tsuba craftsmen possess unique texture as "Higo iron." The surface shows fine irregularities, displaying complex reflections when raking light is applied. Color is predominantly black to dark brown, with restrained ancient patina embodying the domain's martial spirit. Works by Hayashi Matashichi and Shimizu Jingozaemon are said to be identifiable at a glance by their ji-kane quality.
Shoami School: The widespread Shoami clan's works vary by region and era, but generally possess uniform ji-kane with good balance between openwork and carving. Kyoto Shoami tends toward fine, precise itame-hada, while Edo Shoami tends toward somewhat coarser skin patterns.
Nanban Tsubes (using imported materials): Possess uniform composition or fine mesh-like structure, clearly distinct from Japanese-made tamahagane. Surface luster is somewhat metallic and cool, with rust patina patterns often differing markedly from Japanese iron.
Proper observation of ji-kane quality requires appropriate light source and observation technique.
The ji-kane of an iron tsuba bears the imprint of the maker's skill, the quality of materials, and the spirit of the era. Like the jihada of a blade, the ability to read a tsuba's ji-kane deepens appreciation from superficial "observation of appearance" to "interpretation of the interior."
The type of forging skin, rust color tone, and formation state of ko-iro each function as independent information while mutually complementing one another to form an image of a single era and school. The answer to which all three consistently point is the foundation of trustworthy appraisal.
An iron tsuba that has passed through centuries still speaks quietly to us this very moment. Honing the technique and sensibility to read those words is both the true delight of ji-kane appreciation and the path leading to the profound depths of Japanese sword culture.
