Ryuzoji Takanobu

Ryuzoji Takanobu (1529–1584) was a Sengoku daimyo who dominated northern Kyushu and earned the fearsome epithet 'the Bear of Hizen.' Born into a modest household of minor lords in Hizen (Saga), he rose through unwavering resolve and military acumen to become one of Kyushu's three great powers, rivaling the Ōtomo and Shimazu clans.

His ascension came only through overcoming immense hardship. In his youth, he endured the collapse of his liege house, the Shōni clan, and mounting pressure from the Ōtomo, experiencing both monastic vows and return to secular life during his turbulent early years. Yet through indomitable fighting spirit, he recovered his strength and unified nearly all of Hizen by Tenshō 6 (1578), thereafter expanding into Chikuzen, Chikugo, Buzen, and Higo.

As a martial artist, Takanobu was celebrated as a master spearsman—earning the title 'Spear Ryuzoji'—and equally renowned as a connoisseur of swords and blades. He patronized Hizen swordsmiths and encouraged the production of practical battlefield weapons. However, in 1584 at the Battle of Okita Nawate, he fell victim to a surprise attack by a Shimazu–Arima alliance, his massive frame betraying him as he was cut down. After his death, the Ryuzoji clan lost power to the vassal Nabeshima Naoshige and eventually became the Nabeshima domain, continuing into the early modern period. Takanobu's tumultuous life—from provincial obscurity to master of Kyushu—epitomizes the rise and fall of the Sengoku age.
