Nagano Gyoushou, born around Entoku 3rd year (1491), was the lord of the Nagano clan, a powerful family based in Kozuke Province (present-day Gunma Prefecture). Though Kozuke lay under the influence of the Kanto Deputy Shogun, the Uesugi clan, Gyoushou built his own independent power base and became renowned as a leading regional warlord in Kozuke. The Nagano clan's main stronghold, Miharugawa Castle (present-day Mihara-cho, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture), was a vital strategic position in the Kanto region, and Gyoushou skillfully exploited this formidable fortress to his advantage.
A Master General Who Repeatedly Repelled Takeda Shingen's Invasions
Nagano Gyoushou's greatest legacy, known to posterity, was his repeated repulsion of invasions by Takeda Shingen, the 'Tiger of Kai,' into Kozuke Province. Throughout the Tenbun and Koji eras (1530s–1550s), Gyoushou time and again defeated Shingen's vast armies, and his strategic defensive prowess was such that Shingen himself is said to have lamented, 'As long as Gyoushou alone exists, Kozuke cannot be taken.' Gyoushou's genius for repelling large forces with limited troops sprang from defensive tactics that exploited the terrain and from the strength of his governance in winning the hearts of his people.

Kozuke Province was a region where samurai culture flourished in the Kanto, and the warriors of the Nagano clan embodied the practical and steadfast bushido of the Kanto.
