Born in Eishō 11 (1514), Amago Haruhisa was the head of the Amago clan, which was based in Izumo Province (present-day Shimane Prefecture). He further expanded the power his grandfather, Amago Tsunehisa, had built. In Tenbun 21 (1552), the shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru appointed him shugo (provincial military governor) of eight provinces (Izumo, Oki, Hōki, Inaba, Mimasaka, Bizen, Bitchū and Bingo), and he made his name resound as the foremost daimyo of the Chūgoku region.
Long Rivalry with Mōri Motonari
Amago Haruhisa's greatest rival was Mōri Motonari, who grew from a minor daimyo of Aki into the master of the Chūgoku region. The two fought fierce contests for more than ten years. In Tenbun 11–12 (1542–43), when Ōuchi Yoshitaka invaded Gassan-Toda Castle (First Siege of Gassan-Toda Castle), Haruhisa brilliantly repelled the attack. Meanwhile, in the earlier siege of Yoshida-Kōriyama Castle in Tenbun 9–10, he was defeated by Mōri Motonari and lost his hold over Aki. In January 1561 (12th month of Eiroku 3), Haruhisa died suddenly at Gassan-Toda Castle, at the age of 47 (by East Asian reckoning). After his death, the Amago clan rapidly declined and was eventually destroyed by the Mōri clan.
