The Overlord of Sanin: The Fierce General Who Built the Amago Clan to Its Peak—A Great Lord of Izumo Who Vied for Supremacy with Mouri Motonari
Description
The Peak of the Amago Clan's Control of Sanin
Amago Haruhisa, born in Eisho 11 (1514), was the head of the Amago clan, based in Izumo Province (present-day Shimane Prefecture), and further expanded the power that his grandfather Amago Tsunehisa had established. At his height, he is said to have held control over nine provinces—Izumo, Oki, Hōki, Inaba, Bizen, Bingo, Mimasaka, Harima, and Iwami—and became renowned as the greatest daimyo of the Chugoku region. His military prowess and audacious spirit were praised as the "Overlord of Sanin."
The Long Struggle for Supremacy with Mouri Motonari
Amago Haruhisa's greatest rival was Mouri Motonari, who rose from a minor daimyo of Aki Province to become the hegemon of the Chugoku region. The two engaged in fierce conflict for more than a decade. In Tenmon 11–12 (1542–1543), Haruhisa successfully repelled the invasion of Gassantoda Castle by Ouchi Yoshitaka (the First Battle of Gassantoda Castle). However, prior to this, in the campaign against Yoshida Koriyama Castle in Tenmon 9–10, he was defeated by Mouri Motonari and lost control of Aki Province. In Eiroku 3 (1560), Haruhisa died suddenly at Gassantoda Castle at the age of 47. After his death, the Amago clan rapidly declined and was eventually destroyed by the Mouri clan.
Izumo's Sword Culture and Haruhisa
Izumo Province has been known since ancient times as the "Land of Myth" and is also renowned as a source of iron sand. The swordsmiths of Izumo, leveraging abundant iron sand resources, forged excellent swords. The swords that Haruhisa favored were powerful practical blades forged by Izumo swordsmiths, and are said to have possessed magnificent and robust workmanship befitting the Overlord of Sanin.
