Minamoto no Mitsunaka

Minamoto no Mitsunaka (912-997) was a warrior of the mid-Heian period who, as the founder of the Settsu Minamoto branch, laid the groundwork for the prosperity of the entire warrior Minamoto clan in later ages. Also known as "Tada no Mitsunaka," he established his base at Tada in Settsu Province (present-day Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture) and built the authority of the warrior house there. He was a pioneer who, while maintaining close ties with the Fujiwara clan of regents, firmly established the social status of the "warrior" — one who protects the court and aristocrats through armed force.

Mitsunaka is known for his role in the "Anna Incident" of 969, when he informed on the alleged plot of Minamoto no Takaakira, thereby helping the Fujiwara clan secure sole control of the government. This political judgment earned him deep trust from the Fujiwara, and he went on to hold important posts in Settsu, Tanba, and Mutsu, elevating the reputation of his martial house. His sons Yorimitsu and Yorinobu would go on to command warrior bands across the country, and the prototype of Minamoto clan bushido took shape.

Regarding swords, Mitsunaka's era corresponded to a crucial transitional period in which the form of the Japanese sword was shifting from straight blades to curved blades (swords with sori), and Mitsunaka himself belonged to the generation that witnessed this transformation. The warrior band of Tada in Settsu prized high-quality weapons, and Mitsunaka is said to have invested in the training of swordsmiths. The symbolic embodiment of this legacy is the famous sword "Dojigiri Yasutsuna," which Mitsunaka's son Yorimitsu reportedly used to slay the demon Shuten-doji at Mount Oe. This blade, one of Japan's oldest famous swords, is designated a National Treasure. Mitsunaka can truly be said to stand at the very origin point of both warrior society and Japanese sword culture.
