Honjō Shigenaga

Honjō Shigenaga (1540–1614) was a warrior from the Sengoku to early Edo period, a senior retainer of the Uesugi clan and one of the Agakita-shū warlords of northern Echizen. As lord of Honjō Castle, his martial prowess earned him the epithet "Demon God of Echigo." After avenging his father and reclaiming the Honjō family, he served Uesugi Kenshin and distinguished himself at Kawanakajima and in the Kantō campaigns. In 1568 he revolted against Kenshin in the so-called Honjō Shigenaga Rebellion before submitting again. He later sided with Uesugi Kagekatsu in the Otate no Ran and repelled Date Masamune's invasion through clever stratagems. He died in 1614 at age 74, honored with the title "Warrior Hachiman."
