Chōsokabe Morichika

Chōsokabe Morichika (1575-1615) was born as the fourth son of Chōsokabe Motochika, the sengoku daimyō of Tosa (present-day Kōchi Prefecture), and became the last head of the Chōsokabe clan. He sided with the Western Army at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) and was defeated, having Tosa confiscated, but continued to dream of recovering his former domain and participated in the Osaka Campaigns (1614-15). He fought valiantly for the Toyotomi side but was ultimately captured and executed. His tumultuous life is passed down as a tragedy symbolizing the end of the Sengoku period.

Morichika was born in 1575 as the fourth son of Chōsokabe Motochika. Since his brothers had died one after another, he came to succeed as head of the family, and after Motochika's death in 1599, he became the head of the Chōsokabe clan. However, at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), he joined the Western Army (Ishida Mitsunari's side), and it is said he was passive in fighting the Eastern Army in Shikoku. With the Western Army's defeat at the main battle of Sekigahara, Morichika had Tosa Province confiscated entirely.

After his domain was confiscated, Morichika lived as a rōnin in Kyoto, at one point making his living as a teacher at a terakoya (temple school). However, when the Winter Campaign of Osaka occurred in 1614, he entered the castle for the Toyotomi side, dreaming of recovering his former domain and reviving the Toyotomi family. In the following year's Summer Campaign, he also fought valiantly, leading the former elite soldiers of Tosa to battle against Tokugawa forces. After the fall of Osaka Castle, he attempted to flee but was captured and executed at Rokujō Riverbed. He was 41 years old.

In the realm of Japanese swords, Morichika had deep connections to the sword culture of Tosa (Kōchi). As head of the Chōsokabe clan, he inherited the famous blades collected and cherished by his father Motochika. Tosa is a region with a distinctive swordsmithing culture known as "Tosa Uchigatana" (Tosa-style swords), and Morichika was a warrior who grew up within that cultural sphere. It is said that when he participated in the Osaka Campaigns, he carried swords inherited from Tosa along with his former retainers. Morichika's life, embodying the sorrow of a fallen daimyō, is a testimony of an era in which the sword culture of the Sengoku period scattered together with the fate of the warriors.
