Seki Magoroku Kanemoto

Seki Magoroku Kanemoto was a master craftsman representing Seki swordsmithing of the late Muromachi period, and a craftsman who perfected the Seki tradition of "wazamono" (practical cutting blades). The name "Magoroku" is celebrated as the appellation of the second-generation Kanemoto, and Kanemoto is recorded in Japanese sword history as one of the finest craftsmen bearing this distinguished title. His jigane displays finely packed ko-itame with excellent jie, manifesting a robust and crystalline character distinctive of Seki work. The hamon, characterized by the distinctive "Seki Magoroku Three Cedar" pattern with consecutive pointed gunome, embodies active, combat-proven execution. Fine, evenly distributed nie produces the characteristic bright, sharp edge of Seki blades. He is particularly celebrated for exceptional cutting ability and is renowned as a master ranked among the "Saijō Daiwazamono" (Highest Grade of Wazamono) — the highest official recognition in Edo-period sword evaluation for blades of supreme cutting excellence. Seki Magoroku Kanemoto's celebrated blades were favored by numerous warlords including Takeda Shingen and Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Sengoku period, and remain treasured in many collections today. He is positioned as the supreme masterwork of the Seki swordsmithing tradition and holds an exceptionally important place as a representative of "wazamono" in Japanese sword history.
