Description
Magorokkanemoto (c. 1477-) was a renowned Mino transmission swordsmith active from the mid-Muromachi through early-Edo periods. Founder of the Magoro Kanemoto line, one of Seki's two major sword brands alongside Kanesada.
Founder and Legacy
The first Magorokkanemoto was active during the Bunmei era (1469-1487) in Seki and established a prestigious family line. The Magoro Kanemoto name was inherited by over twenty generations, maintaining continuous operation from the Muromachi period through the Edo period into the modern era.
Innovation of the Second Generation
The most famous second-generation Kanemoto, active during the Eisho era (1504-1521), invented an innovative forging method called "Shihojizume" (four-directional cladding). This technique produced blades that were "unbreakable, unbendable, and cut excellently," earning immense popularity among Sengoku-period warlords.
Distinctive Style
The signature characteristic of Magorokkanemoto blades is the "Sanbon Sugi" (three cedars) blade pattern—a distinctive series of sharp, wave-like formations in the blade that appeared in no other smith's work.
Renowned Owners
Takeda Shingen, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kuroda Nagamasa, Maeda Toshimasa, and other Sengoku daimyo favored Magorokkanemoto swords, further elevating the brand's reputation.
Historical Significance
Magorokkanemoto represents an exceptional lineage that maintained superior quality across over twenty generations, establishing Seki as a center of sword-making excellence.
