Toyotomi Hidetsugu

Toyotomi Hidetsugu (1568–1595) was born to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's elder sister Zuiryūin Nisshū and was adopted as Hideyoshi's designated heir. Appointed Senior Second Rank and Minister of the Left, he was designated kampaku (regent) on 11 February 1592 (Tenshō 19/12/28), succeeding Hideyoshi as the second holder of that office.

Militarily, he participated in the Komaki-Nagakute conflict (1584), the Kishu and Shikoku campaigns, and the Odawara Campaign (1590), where he commanded the assault on Yamanaka Castle. As kampaku, he governed domestic affairs from Jurakudai palace while Hideyoshi conducted the Korean campaigns.

He was an accomplished cultural figure—composing renga and waka poetry, studying the tea ceremony under Sen no Rikyu, and having court nobles and Zen monks compile the Utaishō, a commentary on Noh chant texts. He was also a noted collector of classical manuscripts.

Regarding swords, he is recorded as possessing a Muramasa blade known as Ichidō Shichido, and one theory holds that he was entrusted with appraising Hideyoshi's famous swords and carried out test cuts in that role.

In 1595, following the birth of Hideyoshi's biological son Hideyori, Hidetsugu was accused of conspiracy, exiled to Kōyasan, and ordered to commit ritual suicide at age 28. Dozens of family members and attendants were executed at Sanjō riverbed in Kyoto. Though posthumously maligned as the 'murderous regent,' the Jesuit missionary Luis Frois recorded him as 'gentle, thoughtful, and universally beloved,' and modern scholars have largely disputed the more sensationalized accusations.
