Description

Sassa Narimasa (1536-1588) was a warrior who grew from being Shibata Katsuie's ally to becoming a daimyo controlling Etchu Province (present-day Toyama Prefecture), leaving his mark in history through the extraordinary feat of crossing the northern Japanese Alps in midwinter—known as the "Sarasa Crossing." In the power struggle that followed Nobunaga's death, he allied with Tokugawa Ieyasu against Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but was ultimately forced to submit.

Narimasa served in Oda Nobunaga's personal guard, earning military achievements in numerous battles including the Battle of Okehazama. Gaining Nobunaga's trust, he was assigned to the Shibata Katsuie forces in the Hokuriku campaign and played an important role in the conquest of Kaga and Etchu. After suppressing the Etchu Ikko-ikki (one-sect uprising) in 1581, he became a daimyo controlling Etchu from his base at Toyama Castle.

After the Honnoji Incident (1582), Narimasa sided with Katsuie at the Battle of Shizugatake, but after Katsuie's defeat found himself isolated against Hideyoshi. To break out of this situation, he crossed the northern Alps (Tateyama range) in the dead of winter in 1584 to reach Tokugawa Ieyasu at Hamamatsu and appeal for a joint front against Hideyoshi—a legendary feat of endurance and determination.

In his connection to swords, as a daimyo who controlled the renowned sword-producing regions of Etchu and Kaga, Narimasa had deep ties with the swordsmiths of these areas. Etchu Province produced excellent swordsmiths known through "Etchu Noriyuki," and this tradition was maintained and developed under Narimasa. His favored sword was a sturdy Etchu-style battle blade, befitting a warrior who had overcome the harsh winters of the Hokuriku region. After surrendering to Hideyoshi and being transferred to Higo Province, he was ordered to commit ritual suicide in 1588 for his responsibility in the Higo provincial samurai uprising.
