Rokkaku Sadayori

Rokkaku Sadayori (1495-1552) was the head of the Rokkaku clan, which dominated southern Omi Province (present-day southern Shiga Prefecture), and is celebrated as the founder of the clan's restoration. A capable strategist, he skillfully navigated complex political relationships with Miyoshi Nagayoshi and the Hosokawa clan, wielding strong influence over Kyoto politics. He also excelled in domestic governance and legal codification, establishing free markets (rakuichi) in Omi and fostering commerce and culture. Deeply knowledgeable about swordsmanship, he prized practical blades forged by southern Omi smiths. Though the Rokkaku clan later declined with the rise of Oda Nobunaga, the foundations Sadayori built in southern Omi played an important role in Sengoku history.
