Ōuchi Yoshioki

Ōuchi Yoshioki (1477–1528) was a daimyo of the early Sengoku period who embodied the apex of the Ōuchi clan's power. Based in Suō and Nagato provinces, he accumulated immense wealth through trade with China, Kyushu, and the Korean Peninsula. Maintaining close ties with the Ashikaga shogunate, in 1508 he escorted Ashikaga Yoshitane to Kyoto, seizing control of bakufu politics which had fallen into disorder following the death of Hosokawa Masamoto. Over the following decade, he wielded hegemony over the Kinai, Chūgoku, and Kyushu regions, reigning as the supreme power of western Japan.

Yoshioki demonstrated exceptional interest and expertise in swords and armor through continental trade. High-quality iron imported via trade routes with Korea and Ming was supplied to sword smiths in Suō, and sword culture flourished under Ōuchi patronage. Yoshioki himself collected works by renowned sword smiths, and extant documents preserve records of treasured blades that the Ōuchi clan granted to these craftsmen.

Culturally, Yoshioki was an exceptional patron. He developed Yamaguchi (present-day Yamaguchi City) as the "Kyoto of the West," establishing it as a major cultural center by inviting court nobles, monks, and literati. In the Chūgoku region before the later rise of Mōri Motonari, Ōuchi Yoshioki's presence shone as the center of sword craft, martial arts, and culture. His tenure in the Kinai until his return in 1518 testified to his exceptional political and military acumen, making him a singular figure among Sengoku daimyo.
