Ōuchi Yoshihiro

Ouchi Yoshihiro (1356-1399) was a military commander and daimyo from the Nanbokucho to the Muromachi period, head of the Ouchi clan based in Suo. Succeeding his father Ouchi Hiroyo, he served the Muromachi shogunate and brought the Ouchi clan its first period of full prosperity. Holding the shugo posts of several provinces beginning with Suo and Nagato, he was a powerful daimyo who also accumulated wealth through trade with Korea.

Campaigns in Kyushu and Service to the Shogunate

Yoshihiro cooperated with Imagawa Ryoshun (Sadayo), the Kyushu tandai, and joined the war against the Southern Court forces centered on Prince Kaneyoshi and Kikuchi Takemitsu, who held sway in Kyushu. Beginning with the Battle of Yofuri-yama in 1375, he supported the Imagawa forces in battles across the region, accumulating military distinctions and contributing to the suppression of the Southern Court. In addition to such service, he was granted the shugo posts of Izumi and Kii for his distinguished conduct in the Meitoku Rebellion, and Yoshihiro grew into a powerful daimyo holding the shugo posts of several provinces, including Suo, Nagato, Buzen, Izumi, and Kii.

The Oei Rebellion

In time, Yoshihiro's excessive power became a target of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who was wary of mighty daimyo. As his relationship with Yoshimitsu deteriorated, in 1399 (Oei 6) Yoshihiro sought to rally anti-shogunate forces and, while corresponding with the Kamakura kubo Ashikaga Mitsukane and various former Southern Court commanders, raised an army at Sakai in Izumi Province. This was the Oei Rebellion. Yoshihiro built fortifications at Sakai and fought the shogunate army, but, outnumbered, he fell in battle at Sakai in the twelfth month of that year.

Later Assessment

Yoshihiro is known as a daimyo of great martial valor and is regarded as the man who laid the foundation of the Ouchi clan's prosperity. The Oei Rebellion is known as an event symbolizing the tension between shogunal power and powerful shugo daimyo, and Yoshihiro left his name in history as its central figure. Even after his death, the Ouchi continued as a leading daimyo of western Japan and exerted great influence over the Chugoku region in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods.
