Nakagawa Kiyohide

Nakagawa Kiyohide (1542–1583) was a Sengoku-period warlord based in Settsu Province (present-day Osaka Prefecture) and a fierce warrior who served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. His name is read as both "Kiyohide" and "Seishū." He is known as a tragic general who fell in combat during a sudden assault by Sakuma Morimasa at the Battle of Shizugatake (1583), and his death became one of the pivotal moments that determined the course of the battle.

Kiyohide was born into a family of minor samurai (jizamurai) based in Settsu Province and rose to prominence as a retainer of Araki Murashige. However, in Tenshō 6 (1578), when Araki Murashige rebelled against Oda Nobunaga, Kiyohide quickly defected and sided with Nobunaga. This decision fundamentally changed his fate. Thereafter, he served as a senior retainer overseeing Settsu's governance, and after the Incident at Honnō-ji (1582), became an influential retainer of Hideyoshi.

At the Battle of Shizugatake (1583), Kiyohide garrisoned the fortification at Ōiwayama. Elite forces led by Sakuma Morimasa of the Shibata faction launched a surprise assault. Despite fierce resistance, Kiyohide fell in battle at age 42. His death reportedly had a profound impact on Hideyoshi, who mourned Kiyohide's death with tears. Resolved not to waste Kiyohide's sacrifice, Hideyoshi accelerated his counteroffensive, which led to a massive assault on Morimasa's isolated forces.

Kiyohide's eldest son, Hidemasa, carried on his father's legacy as one of Hideyoshi's retainers. Ibaraki in Settsu Province (present-day Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture), which Kiyohide defended, later flourished as the Nakagawa clan's stronghold, preserving his samurai legacy.

Regarding Japanese swords, Kiyohide possessed swordsmanship as a Settsu samurai and honed practical katana technique through campaigns under Araki Murashige. Settsu Province, like Yamashiro and Yamato, had a rich sword-smithing tradition with many celebrated makers in his region. At Shizugatake, he is remembered as a warrior who fought valiantly with katana in hand. Blades bestowed by Nobunaga and Hideyoshi were treasured as household heirlooms, with some passed down to the Ibaraki Nakagawa clan. Kiyohide's brief but brilliant life as a Settsu warrior makes him widely recognized among Japanese sword enthusiasts as an essential figure in the Battle of Shizugatake.
