Description
Furuta Oribe (1543-1615) was a military commander who was active from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period, and a sukimono (tea connoisseur) daimyō who, as a leading disciple of Sen no Rikyū, brought a revolution to the world of the tea ceremony. He was born in Mino Province and was also a military commander who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Rikyū's death, he was recognized as the foremost tea master in the realm, served as tea ceremony instructor to Tokugawa Hidetada, and led Momoyama culture with a distinctive aesthetic sensibility known as 'Oribe taste'. Oribe ware, characterized by distortion and unconventional designs, embodies his aesthetic sensibility in ceramics, and it continues to be loved today. At Sekigahara, he belonged to the Eastern Army and became a daimyō with 10,000 koku, but at the Siege of Osaka he was suspected of secretly communicating with the Toyotomi side, and after Osaka fell he was ordered to commit seppuku. A letter asking Hosokawa Tadaoki to lend him a sword also survives, and the sword is said to have been one to be worn at the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Go-Yōzei.
