Description
Fūma Kotarō (dates of birth and death unknown) was the leader of the shinobi (ranpa) who served the Later Hōjō clan (Odawara Hōjō). The name “Fūma Kotarō” is also said to have been passed down through generations as a hereditary name, but contemporary sources that reveal his true identity are scarce. He was known for night raids, espionage and disruption operations, and it is also said that he launched a night attack on the camp of Takeda Katsuyori, causing great confusion (the night raid at the Kise River in Tenshō 9 (1581)). After the Later Hōjō clan fell, it was also said that his band turned into bandits, and the story that he was captured and executed in Edo spread in later ages. As the leader of shinobi representative of the Kantō region, he has remained the subject of countless creative works to this day.
