Fūma Kotarō

Fūma Kotarō (birth date unknown – 1603) was a commander of shinobi (ranpa) who served the Later Hōjō Clan (Odawara Hōjō). The name 'Fūma Kotarō' is said to have been passed down through generations, with the most famous fifth-generation bearer demonstrating remarkable exploits in battles against the Takeda and Uesugi clans. He excelled in nighttime raids, espionage, and disruption tactics. It is said he launched a nighttime attack on the encampment of Takeda Katsuyo, causing great chaos (the Kisegawa night attack of Tenshō 9). After the fall of the Later Hōjō Clan, it is said he either returned to farming or turned to banditry. Eventually, he was captured by Tokugawa forces and executed. As a master of shinobi-specific weapons like concealed blades and tanto, and renowned for techniques of sword concealment and disguise, Fūma Kotarō stands as Kanto's quintessential ninja leader and holds a unique position in sword history.
