Hosho Sadayoshi

Hosho Sadayoshi was a swordsmith of the Hosho school in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture), active from the late Kamakura period into the Nanbokuchō era. The Hosho school is one of the celebrated 'Five Schools of Yamato' (Senjūin, Taima, Tegai, Shikkake, and Hosho), and Sadayoshi was a master craftsman who faithfully transmitted the traditional techniques of the Hosho school. His work is grounded in the Yamato tradition's characteristic masame-dominated jigane and suguha-based hamon with fine nie, with tobiyaki, nijūba, kinsuji, and inazuma appearing abundantly as internal activities in the blade. Since ancient times, Yamato swords have been treasured by warriors, temples, shrines, and the court alike. The Hosho school had particularly deep ties to temples and shrines in Yamato, and produced formal votive swords for them. Signed works inscribed 'Hosho Sadayoshi' survive in tachi and tantō forms, with examples designated Jūyō Tōken.
