Tsuda Sukehiro

Tsuda Sukehiro (1637–1682; the name conventionally refers to the second generation, who established the definitive reputation) was one of the preeminent masters of Shintō swordmaking during the early Edo period, ranked among the Saijō Ōwazamono—the ultimate cutting-performance grade—and highly regarded as a defining figure representing innovation in hamon design during the Shintō period. While both the first and second generations are documented, it was particularly the second-generation Sukehiro (1637–1682) who served as the central figure solidifying the renown of "Tsuda Sukehiro"; conventionally, the name refers to the second generation. He established his workshop in Osaka Castle town and is positioned as the leading smith who established Osaka Shintō.

Sukehiro's most celebrated achievement is the distinctive hamon known as the tōranba ("billowing-wave" hamon). The tōranba features gunome and ō-gunome undulations overlapping grandly, with the entire hamon expressing a magnificent dynamism resembling turbulent waves crashing ashore. The habe (edge) displays nie and nioi in harmonious balance, while sunagashi and kinsuji work with refined precision throughout. As the originator of this "wave-like hamon," Sukehiro profoundly influenced later smiths, inspiring the creation of numerous Osaka Shintō blades bearing similar designs.

The jigane displays a homogeneous surface of tightly compressed ko-itame, with fine and evenly distributed jinie, yielding a bright and luminous finish. The combination of this refined jigane and the grand tōranba hamon constitutes the supreme visual appeal of Sukehiro's blades—works that, while serving as practical weapons, simultaneously achieve the highest standards of fine craftsmanship and artistic excellence.

Sukehiro's blades bear signatures including "Sesshū-jū Sukehiro," "Tsuda Sukehiro," and "Tōranba," with many extant examples bearing date inscriptions. Numerous authentic works by Sukehiro are designated Tokubetsu Jūyō Tōken (Specially Important Sword) and Jūyō Tōken (Important Sword), housed in the Token Hakubutsukan, Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, and renowned domestic and international collections. As one of the rare smiths granted the Saijō Ōwazamono ranking for cutting performance, Sukehiro embodies the apex of the Shintō period in both practical utility and aesthetic excellence, and continues to be highly valued today.
