Tegai Kaneyoshi

Tegai Kaneyoshi was a swordsmith of the late Kamakura to Nanbokuchō period, working in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) as a significant member of the Tegai school—one of the five great schools of Yamato-den. Founded near the Tegai Gate of Tōdai-ji Temple, the school produced blades of refined spiritual character under the patronage of Nara's powerful Buddhist institutions. Kaneyoshi's blades display the Yamato tradition at its most refined: flowing masame-hada with uniform ji-nie, restrained suguha or ko-midare hamon with tight nioi and subtle nie spotting, and an overall clarity of character that reflects the Buddhist aesthetic environment. His surviving signed works—several designated Important Cultural Properties or Important Swords—are rare and highly prized, representing the technical culmination of the Tegai school during the pivotal Nanbokuchō transitional period.
