Taima Kuniyuki

Taima Kuniyuki was a swordsmith of the late Kamakura period active at Taima in Yamato Province (present-day Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture). He is the founder of the Taima school, one of the Yamato Go-ha (five great schools of Yamato tradition). He held the title Hyoe-no-jo (a mid-rank officer title in the Hyoefu guard bureau) and is recorded as active during the Shoo era (1288–1293), after which the Taima school flourished through the Nanbokucho period.

The school worked under the patronage of Kofuku-ji Temple on its shoen estate. Kuniyuki was the first smith of the school to inscribe a name (mei) on blades; however, no dated signatures survive and attribution of specific blades to the first generation Kuniyuki is difficult, as many unsigned blades are simply attributed to the Taima school.

The Taima school is noted for producing the most imposing sugata among the Yamato schools: long, broad-bodied tachi with shallow sori and characteristic inokubi-kissaki (boar's-neck point), reflecting the late Kamakura martial aesthetic. The jihada is itame tending to nagare with masame mixed in, exhibiting the Yamato tradition's characteristic texture, while the je of strong nie distinguishes Taima from other Yamato schools. The hamon is predominantly notare mixed with gunome, with sunagashi, deep nioi, and fine ko-nie — a style sometimes described as approaching the Soshu school of Yukimitsu in quality.

The National Treasure tachi signed Kuniyuki (blade 69.7 cm, sori 1.5 cm, moto-haba 2.8 cm, nakago 17.6 cm), held at the Sword Museum (Kyoto), was designated a National Treasure on March 20, 1954. It is described as "a tachi of broad mihaba and thick kasane, imposingly typical of mid-Kamakura sugata," with notare-gunome hamon and sunagashi — a textbook example of Kuniyuki's finest work.

Kuniyuki stands as the originator of the most powerful and imposing branch of the Yamato tradition, his blades bridging the disciplined restraint of Yamato and the dynamic energy of the Soshu school.
