Niji Kunishige

Niji Kunishige was a swordsmith of the late Kamakura period belonging to the Rai school of Yamashiro Province (present-day Kyoto Prefecture), known by the appellation 'Niji' (two-character) because his blades are signed with only the two characters 'Kunishige.' The Rai school was the premier swordsmithing lineage of Yamashiro, and Kunishige is highly regarded as one of its most accomplished masters. His jigane features densely packed ko-itame with abundant jinie and brilliant, clear chikei—the refined steel characteristic of the Rai school at its best. His hamon centers on ko-suguha and ko-notare, executed with deep, rich nioi and fine nie in a refined manner that embodies the pure, dignified beauty of the Rai aesthetic. The bōshi is rounded and compact with a pleasant, elastic quality. Extant works by Niji Kunishige include pieces designated National Treasure and Important Cultural Property, placing him alongside Rai Kunitsugu and Rai Kunimitsu as one of the Rai school's greatest masters. Working at the height of Kamakura warrior culture, his blades represent the technical zenith of the Yamashiro tradition and occupy a distinguished place in Japanese sword history.
