Kanetsugu

Kanetsugu was a swordsmith active around the Kannō era (1350–1351) of the Nanbokuchō period, belonging to Naoe-Shizu, a branch of the Mino tradition.

Lineage

Kanetsugu is recorded as either the son or a disciple of Kaneuji, known as Shizu Saburō Kaneuji, one of "Masamune's Ten Disciples." The workshop Kaneuji established at Shizu in Mino Province came to be known as "Naoe-Shizu" after disciples including Kanetoshi, Kanetomo, and Kanetsugu relocated to Naoe in the same province.

Style

His work is hira-zukuri with an iori-mune, thin relative to its width, with a slight uchizori curvature. The jigane is a tightly forged ko-itame with fine forging texture and a slightly whitened surface. The hamon shows deep nioi with small gunome inclining toward midare, characteristic of the Naoe-Shizu style.

Representative Work

Surviving signed examples by Kanetsugu are said to be rare; among them, a tantō bearing a large signature cut below the mekugi-ana is designated an Important Art Object. This piece was formerly in the collection of the political activist Sugiyama Shigemaru and is now held by the Touken World Foundation.

Reputation

Naoe-Shizu is known as the school that transmitted Sōshū-tradition technique into Mino Province, and Kanetsugu was one of the smiths who supported the group in its formative period. Given the rarity of signed works, the surviving tantō is valued as evidence documenting the Naoe-Shizu style.
