真恒
Description
Sanetsune was a swordsmith of the Ko-Bizen school active in Bizen Province (present-day eastern Okayama Prefecture) from the late Heian period into the early Kamakura period. Few of his works survive, but the tachi "signed Sanetsune," preserved at Kunōzan Tōshō-gū Shrine in Shizuoka Prefecture, has been designated a National Treasure and stands as a representative work of the school.
Representative Work
The Kunōzan Tōshō-gū tachi has an imposing form with a blade length of nearly 90 cm, a wide mihaba, and thick kasane, giving it a robust and dignified presence. The tang bears the two-character signature "Sanetsune." It is said to have been dedicated by Tokugawa Hidetada.
Designation
The blade was first designated an Important Cultural Property before being elevated to National Treasure status, and is regarded as one of the finest swords in the Kunōzan Tōshō-gū collection.
Reputation
Although the scarcity of surviving works limits detailed stylistic study, the single blade held at Kunōzan Tōshō-gū has secured Sanetsune's place in sword history as a benchmark work of the Ko-Bizen school.
