Echizen Kanenaka

Echizen Kanenaka was a swordsmith of the early Edo period active in Echizen Province (present-day Fukui Prefecture), representing the Echizen branch of the Mino-descended smithing tradition. His blades combine the sound Mino-den foundation—flowing itame-hada, dynamic gunome-midare hamon with angular features—with the refinement characteristic of Echizen work. As one of the leading smiths of the flourishing Echizen smithing scene in the early Edo period, his clients included samurai of the Fukui domain. Multiple signed works are designated Important Swords, and his name was carried forward through successive generations, each distinguishable by subtle variations in jigane and hamon style studied by modern sword scholars.
