Lineage
The Dotanuki school was a group of swordsmiths based in Dotanuki, Tamana District, Higo Province (present-day Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture), traditionally said to descend from the Enju school of the Yamashiro tradition. Kiyokuni was one of the smiths discovered and retained, alongside Masakuni (who became the school's leading figure), by Katō Kiyomasa after Kiyomasa entered Higo Province in 1587.
Career
Kiyokuni is said to have received the character "Kiyo" from Katō Kiyomasa's own name by Kiyomasa's order, taking the smithing name Dotanuki Kiyokuni. He is recorded as having forged blades in Ikura, Tamana District, though he produced comparatively few works and is said to have later left the smithing trade. After Kiyomasa's death, the Dotanuki school lost its patron and declined, not seeing a full-scale revival until the Shōwa period.
Assessment
The Dotanuki school was known for a sturdy, practical style prioritizing durability ("unbreakable, unbending") over ornamentation, and its blades were used broadly among Katō clan retainers down to foot soldiers. Kiyokuni, alongside Masakuni who became the school's central figure, is positioned as one of the practical Higo swordsmiths cultivated under Katō Kiyomasa.
