Dewa-no-kami Masatsune

Dewa-no-kami Masatsune was a master swordsmith representing Owari Province (present-day Aichi Prefecture) in the early to mid-Edo period. Among the Three Masters of Owari, he is recognized as one of the esteemed masters alongside Hida-no-kami Ujifusa and Hōki-no-kami Nobutaka.

Masatsune's jigane displays moderately flowing itame with abundant ji-nie that imparts a moist, refined texture to the steel. While inheriting the characteristics of the Mino tradition (Seki tradition), many of his works demonstrate meticulous finishing, showing technical refinement progressing as the era advanced. His hamon centers on gunome and ko-gunome, interspersed with notare, achieving a well-ordered, elegant appearance. The nioi-guchi is appropriately frothy with abundant ko-ashi and yo activity. Overall, the execution—combining dignity and intensity—embodies the aesthetic ideal of the Three Masters of Owari.

Masatsune was one of the masters within the Masatsune lineage who received the official title Dewa-no-kami, indicating a position of elevated rank recognized by the shogunate. His characteristic signature is carved in long form as "Dewa-no-kami Fujiwara Masatsune," with careful execution that enhances the dignity of each work. His productive career was long, producing consistently excellent works over nearly half a century.

The era in which Masatsune lived was a transitional period when the Tokugawa shogunate's rule had stabilized and the role of swords among the samurai class was shifting from combat to ritual and art. Masatsune's blades responded masterfully to the demands of this era. In aesthetic completion, they represent the culmination achieved by the Three Masters of Owari, and in the modern era, many of his works are highly valued as Important Swords or Special Important Swords. Masatsune is known for refined sophistication in his style and is remembered in posterity as one of the Three Masters of Owari.
