Darani Katsukuni (I)

Darani Katsukuni was a swordsmith active in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture) in the early Edo period, whose original signature was Ieshige. According to sword-dealer sources (Isao Machii's Katana no Kura, e-sword.jp, and others), Katsukuni was the founder of the Darani school, which forged under the patronage of the wealthy Maeda clan of the million-koku Kaga domain, and served the Maeda under the surname Matsudo.

When Katsukuni received the court title Iyo-no-daijō, he changed his family name from Fujiwara to Tachibana and renamed himself from Ieshige to Katsukuni. He came to be popularly known as "Darani Katsukuni" after Darani, the district of Kaga Province (within present-day Kanazawa) where he forged. The Darani school also included the smith Ietada as well as the Kanewaka lineage, said to descend from Shizu Kaneuji.

Katsukuni's work is known for favoring the sanbon-sugi ("three cedars") style associated with Sōmi Kanemoto. His steel is finely and beautifully forged, tempered with a bright, clear togari-gunome hamon whose ashi (activity lines) run vigorously toward the edge; nie-suji connect the valleys of the temper pattern, and thick nie accumulates in the ji, giving the blades a spirited, dynamic quality.

The Darani Katsukuni lineage continued through successive generations, who took names such as Matsudo Zensuke, and flourished down to the eighth generation in the early Meiji period. As a swordsmithing family representative of Kaga, and having established a distinctive body of work under the patronage of the Maeda clan, the Darani school occupies an indispensable place in the history of the Kaga tradition.
