Description
Yukihiro was a swordsmith of the Samonji (Sa) school active in Chikuzen Province (present-day Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture) during the Nanbokuchō period. The Samonji school traces its origins to the monk Ryōsai of Engyō-ji, who became affiliated with Zendō-ji in Hakata; the lineage produced, after founder Ryōsai and Nyūsai, the school's most celebrated smith Sa, followed by second-generation Yasuyoshi, Yoshisada, Sadayoshi, and Yukihiro.
Representative Work
Very few signed works by Yukihiro survive. His only known dated piece is a tantō signed "Chikushū-jū Yukihiro / Kannō 1, 8th month" (1350). This blade has been designated a National Treasure and is now held by the Tsuchiura City Museum.
Standing
While the Samonji school is well known as a leading Chikuzen exponent of the Sōshū tradition, the scarcity of Yukihiro's signed works has limited detailed study of his individual style. Nonetheless, his sole surviving dated work — a National Treasure — serves as a key benchmark for dating works of the school.
