Lineage
Awataguchi Kuniie is traditionally regarded as the founder of the Awataguchi school of swordsmiths, based in Awataguchi, Yamashiro Province (present-day Higashiyama, Kyoto). His father, Kuniyori, is said to have been an armorer, while Kuniie himself took up swordsmithing.
Historical Record
No signed work or securely attributed piece by Kuniie himself is known to survive, and details of his life and dates remain largely traditional. However, his six sons — Kunitomo, Hisakuni, Kuniyasu, Kunikiyo, Arikuni, and Kunitsuna — all became accomplished swordsmiths known collectively as the "Six Awataguchi Brothers," who served as goban-kaji (rotating imperial swordsmiths) to the retired Emperor Go-Toba, making them central figures in Yamashiro sword production in the early Kamakura period.
Reputation
As no work of his own survives, Kuniie's individual skill cannot be directly assessed, but he is credited in the history of Japanese swordsmithing as the father and progenitor of the six brothers who elevated the Awataguchi school to one of the most prestigious lineages in the craft.
