Uesugi Kagetora

Uesugi Kagetora (1554–1579) was born as the seventh son of Hōjō Ujiyasu and became the adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin through the Hōjō-Uesugi peace accord of 1569. Given the name 'Kagetora' by Kenshin himself, he was designated head of the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan and holder of the Kantō Kanrei (Deputy Shogun of the Kantō) title.

In March 1578 (Tenshō 6), Kenshin died suddenly, triggering a succession dispute between Kagetora and the other adopted son, Uesugi Kagekatsu—known as the Otate no Ran (御館の乱). Kagetora initially held an advantage, but when Takeda Katsuyori chose to ally with Kagekatsu, the balance of power shifted decisively. Hōjō reinforcements arrived too late, and in 1579 Kagetora found himself isolated at Samegao Castle (present-day Myōkō City, Niigata Prefecture), where he died by his own hand at age 26.

His Hōjō lineage and formal claim as Kenshin's designated successor earned him broad support among Echigo provincial lords and Kantō warriors. His defeat in the Otate no Ran severed Hōjō-Uesugi relations and had lasting consequences for the process of national unification. No specific sword records survive for Kagetora personally, though he would have been involved with the administration of Kenshin's celebrated collection of named blades.
