Torii Suneemon

Torii Suneemon (birth year unknown–1575) was an ashigaru who served the Okudaira clan and is known for his fierce loyalty at the Battle of Nagashino. In 1575, while Takeda Katsuyori's siege of Nagashino Castle continued and the castle, its provision storehouse having been burned, was nearing its fall, he set out under cover of night for Okazaki as an envoy seeking reinforcements from the Oda and Tokugawa, and succeeded in securing a promise of reinforcements. However, on his return journey he was captured by Takeda forces. Although he was ordered to tell the castle, in exchange for his life, that no reinforcements would come, he instead loudly told the officers and soldiers within the castle that reinforcements were on their way, and was sentenced to crucifixion. His resolute end has been passed down to later generations as an event that symbolizes the warrior code of the Sengoku period. To this day, a monument to his crucifixion and a grave remain in Arumi in Shinshiro City, near the Nagashino Castle ruins.
