Togo Shigeatai

Togo Shigeatai (1561–1643) was a samurai warlord of Satsuma Domain (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture) and a sword sage whose name is inscribed in Japanese sword history as the founder of Shigenryu swordsmanship. After studying the Tenshin Shoji Kenkyu school of swordsmanship, he established his own sword principles and founded Shigenryu, creating a secret martial art that became Satsuma Domain's official martial law—guarded as a domain secret, forbidden to outsiders and external practice.

Shigeatai was born into a family of Satsuma samurai and devoted himself to martial training from childhood. Some accounts say that when he journeyed to Kyoto, he studied under Abbot Yoshikichi of the Tenshin Shoji Kenkyu school; others claim he pursued his own independent research into sword principles. Upon returning to Satsuma, Shigeatai established Shigenryu and became sword instructor to Shimazu Iehisa (the first daimyo of Satsuma Domain). Thereafter, Shigenryu was transmitted as the domain's martial law through successive generations and became a required martial art for all Satsuma samurai.

The defining characteristics of Shigenryu are its distinctive stance called the 'dragonfly stance' (tonbo no kamae) and the principle of 'one shout, one strike.' The opening strike—a single powerful downward cut delivered from high overhead aimed at the opponent's head—is treated as paramount, and a second strike is deemed unnecessary. To develop this explosive first-strike technique, 'thousand-strike training' (senbon uchi), which involves repeatedly striking dead tree branches with a wooden sword, became a crucial conditioning method. The fear that late Edo period Satsuma samurai inspired as swordsmen was the direct result of this rigorous Shigenryu training.

Shigeatai's martial philosophy deeply permeated the spiritual essence of Satsuma warriors, shaping the image of the fierce and valiant 'Satsuma Hayabito.' The Satsuma samurai who received his teachings played a significant role in the Meiji Restoration, and Shigenryu—as a school embodying the practical combat application of the katana—continues to be preserved to this day, centered in Kagoshima.
