鈴木孫一
Firearms Commander of the Saika-shū, Master Gunner Who Led the Sengoku's Most Formidable Mercenaries and Troubled Oda Nobunaga at the Ishiyama Battles
Description
Suzuki Magoichi (dates of birth and death uncertain, died around 1589) was the leader of the Saika-shū, based in Kii Province's Saika region during the Sengoku period, a warrior renowned as a master gunner. The Saika-shū allied with the Honganji forces and fiercely opposed Oda Nobunaga during the Ishiyama Battles (1570-1580), and their outstanding firearms unit repeatedly troubled Nobunaga's forces. Employing organized volley fire tactics, their achievement in holding off the invasion of what was called the era's strongest army—Oda forces—for ten years was extraordinary. After the conclusion of the Ishiyama Battles, he moved about various locations, and tradition holds that he later served Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The name 'Suzuki Magoichi' is also said to be a collective term for multiple individuals, and much mystery surrounds his true identity. He is one of the representative Sengoku warriors of Japan's matchlock gun culture, having greatly contributed to the development and spread of firearms tactics during the Sengoku period.
