Satomi Yoshitaka (1512–1574) was a sengoku daimyo based in Awa Province (present-day southern Chiba Prefecture) and a valiant general known as the "Tiger of Awa." Commanding a powerful naval force, he dominated the waters of Tokyo Bay and, while fiercely contending with the Hōjō clan, established a major domain in southern Kantō.

Yoshitaka was born in 1512 as the son of Satomi Saneyō. In 1533, when his father Saneyō was killed by his nephew Satomi Yoshitoyoshi, Yoshitaka killed the latter and became head of the Satomi clan. Thereafter, he engaged in fierce struggles with the Hōjō clan over control of Awa Province.

Yoshitaka's greatest strength lay in his naval force. Awa Province, surrounded by sea on three sides and blessed with numerous good harbors, possessed favorable geography for developing powerful maritime capability. This naval force collided with the Hōjō navy in contests for control of Tokyo Bay, engaging in fierce back-and-forth combat. Furthermore, Yoshitaka allied with Uesugi Kenshin in a strategy to counter the Hōjō, playing an important role in the balance of power in Kantō.

Regarding his relation to swords, Yoshitaka actively patronized the sword-forging culture transmitted in Awa and Sagami provinces. Although Awa Province was not a distinctive sword-producing region called "Bōshū mono," the Satomi clan's warriors favored swords of the Sōshū tradition. Yoshitaka himself treasured Sōshū masterblades as his personal swords and valued the Japanese sword even in naval combat led by his fleet.

Yoshitaka closed his life in 1574 at the age of sixty-two. The life of Yoshitaka, who experienced many battles including the Mifuneyama and Konōdai engagements, exemplified the typical sengoku-period regional daimyo. As the head of the Satomi clan, which later became the model for the Edo-period popular novel *Nanzō Satomi Hakken Den*, he remains widely known in modern times.
