Life and Origins

Saito Yoshitatsu (1527–1561) was the eldest son of the celebrated Sengoku daimyo Saito Dosan of Mino Province. Born in 1527, he was formally named Saito Takamasa before receiving the character "Yoshi" as a gift from Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru, thereafter calling himself Yoshitatsu. He was also recognized as heir of the Isshiki clan by the Muromachi shogunate, lending his family additional prestige.

The Battle of Nagaragawa and Patricide

Dosan favored a younger son and appeared to intend disinheriting Yoshitatsu. In 1555, Yoshitatsu invited his two younger brothers to a meeting and had them killed. The following year at the Battle of Nagaragawa (1556), Yoshitatsu led a far larger force against his own father, who was defeated and slain on the banks of the Nagara River. The son who killed the legendary "Viper of Mino" became a figure synonymous with the ruthless logic of the Sengoku age.

Governance of Mino and Resistance to Nobunaga

After consolidating Mino, Yoshitatsu established a council of senior retainers and reformed the land tenure system, effectively pacifying the province. He was appointed to senior court posts by the shogunate and repelled every attempt by Oda Nobunaga to invade Mino, frustrating Nobunaga throughout his brief reign.

Legacy

Yoshitatsu died of illness in 1561 at only 33 years of age. His early death opened the door for Nobunaga's eventual conquest of Mino. Modern historians regard him as a highly competent daimyo whose premature death significantly shaped the trajectory of Nobunaga's rise.
