Ōtomo Yoshisuke

Ōtomo Yoshikane (1502-1550) was the twentieth head of the Ōtomo clan based in Bungo Province (present-day Ōita Prefecture) and the father of Ōtomo Sōrin (Yoshishige). He wielded great power in northern Kyushu and expanded the Ōtomo clan's influence with Bungo-fuchi (present-day Ōita city) as his base—though it was in his son Sōrin's generation that Bungo-fuchi flourished as a southern barbarian trading port. However, during a succession dispute known as the Nikai-kuzure Incident (1550), he was wounded by retainers supporting his illegitimate son Shioimaru, whom he intended to designate as heir, and died shortly thereafter. He favored Kyushu-tradition swords forged by Bungo smiths and fostered a distinctive forging culture that leveraged iron materials obtained through southern barbarian trade. As the father who built the Ōtomo clan's golden age and laid the cultural groundwork for Sōrin's engagement with sword culture, he occupies an important place in sword history.
